I am 73 and a life long reader. In all my years of reading I've rated only a handful of books a five. Too many readers over rate books.
I find looking at reviews and rating useful - particularly when there are ratings that aren’t 5 - that tells me a lot, whereas not having a rating doens’t help me. How do I know that the person just couldn’t be bothered to rate it regardless of whether they would rate it 1 or 5?

I only have a handful of 5 star books per year, and when an author is on GoodReads I feel guilty if I only award two or three stars, but thankfully with John Boyne so far I've only read three of his books (well, I'm about 60 pages from finishing the third), and it looks as though it 5 stars for three out of three from me!
