Prevarication ~ Chpt 5 Excerpt

Upon arrival at the condo, they had noticed that all the news crews had returned. They sat in the truck for a moment before exiting. Lotus was new to all the drama going on surrounding Jessica, but she was willing to defend her newfound sister. “Let’s get this shit over with,” Jessica announced.
As they pushed through the crowd, Jessica heard one of them ask a question about the death of Denver. She stopped dead in her tracks and turned to the crowd and asked, “Who died?”
“Miss Milner, did you not know that Professor Denver Washington was found in his home dead?” a news reporter asked.
“No comment,” she replied, pushing her way to the door and anxiously waiting to get to the television to find out what was going on.
She rushed up to the condo, ran into the living room and turned on the television. There she saw the story that Professor Denver Washington had been found dead at his duplex. They reported that his wife stated that she had not talked to him since the beginning of the investigation into his misconduct case. They went on to say that he had been dead for about a week and they believed that he had been poisoned.
“They are going to be looking for me,” Jessica panicked.
“You have been locked in this apartment. You haven’t had any contact with him babe. They can’t blame you for that.”
“I need to tell you something,” Jessica said. “I met with him last week. You were in the bed sleeping when I eased out.”
“Little Sister! What were you thinking?”
“I wasn’t. Nobody was telling me anything and I wanted to hear his side of the story. I wanted to make sure he knew that he was making a mistake leaving Amore. I told him that I loved Justin and that I was moving on with my life and how he should do the same thing,” she cried. “I didn’t want to tell any of you because I knew you would all be mad at me.”
“First the sexcapade, now murder. My mother isn’t going to like this at all. I’m glad we didn’t make it to your fitting and alteration of her dress for you,” Jaylen said in disappointment.
“I don’t know what to think. The more I show you that I’m here for you, the more shit you get tangled in,” Justin stated. “But again, I’m going to stand behind you. I will tell my father what has happened and see if he could find out anything.”
“Did you kill him sissy?” Lotus asked.
“No, I promise you. I was only there to tell him that it was over. I didn’t stay long, a half hour at the most.”
Justin called his father and informed him of the news before the police came knocking at the door. He advised that Jessica should not answer any questions and to stay out of the spotlight. Justin talked with his mother and asked if they could stay there with her for a while. Reluctantly, she agreed saying, “At least here she can’t creep out unless she pays off one of the guards.”
Justin told everyone to gather anything they needed from the apartment because they would not be returning for a while. He informed them that they would be staying with his mother until the end of the semester and until the investigation had concluded.
“Shit! Now I have to sleep in the house with Sybil. Thanks Jessica,” Kayla joked.
“Who is Sybil?” Lotus asked.
“You will soon find out.” Jaylen warned.
