I've been writing on and off since elementary school. Writing poetry and short horror stories were my salvation through high school. When my children were toddlers, I dreamed of publishing a picture book. When they were in elementary school, I wrote my first middle grade novel (still needs much editing!) By the time I started writing novels, I became very serious about my writing. I took workshops, college courses, correspondence courses, filled my library with "how to write" books (and read them!) and most importantly I applied what I learned. Add to that attending conferences in both Toronto

I have learned three ways to deal with writer's block.

1) If I know how my story ends, I don't get writer's block. I know where my story is going.

2) I outline outline outline and then I write my story by scenes instead of from beginning to end. Inserting the scenes in order as I go. That way I write what I'm in the mood to write. By the time I get to the last few scenes I haven't been jazzed about, then I decide if those scenes are necessary, is there something about them that doesn't work for the story, is there some reason I don't want to write them (and then fix it!)

3) Skip the part where I'm stuck, highlight it and write the next scene. Then come back to it in the end or when a resolution presents itself. (less)

Better your chances by learning about writing, practice writing, keep writing, learn more about writing, apply what you learn about writing, then go learn more about writing. It's also important that you study writing not only overall, but study in the specific genre that you write. If you write for kids and teens, then read some books on how to write for kids and teens.
