Rachel Dacus I write every day. And I respect my Muse. If she doesn't want to show up on one project, I turn to another. But I keep putting words down after words.

Looking for ideas for new novels

Ideas for new novels seem to fall into my mind at the worst moments. In the middle of a meeting or phone call, falling asleep, watching television with my husband. He doesn’t love it when I suddenly stop paying attention to our murder mystery show and begin typing. But I’m now in that swampy creative […]

Great characters, overwrought plot

I so enjoyed the evocation of turn-of-the-century New York, the intelligent Tillie and her urge to fight the strictures of society on a young heiress and find her way to a literary life. But the macabre elements in t

“I love the needle poke, the red pop/
and when an arc of red drops,/
quivering and shaped like wings/
beg me to lick them off,/
quickly savoring your shoulder/
newly marked with a nearly invisible/
but indelible butterfly”
Rachel Dacus, Gods of Water and Air

“I have an everyday religion that works for me. Love yourself first, and everything else falls into line.”
Lucille Ball

“I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat and a gun. I put them on and went out of the room.”
Raymond Chandler, Farewell, My Lovely

“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.”
Omar Khayyám

“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.”
Pablo Neruda, 100 Love Sonnets

“But I love your feet
only because they walked
upon the earth and upon
the wind and upon the waters,
until they found me.”
Pablo Neruda
