I'm a historian, environmentalist, and singer from Edinburgh.

I'm drawn to odd, obscure, written-off things: you can keep Jane Austen, butterflies, Glen Nevis and Mozart - I'll enthuse about Walter Scott, spiders, the Angus Glens, and a composer called Peter Fussell who was organist of Winchester in the late eighteenth century.

But I'll take, as Gerald Manley-Hopkins says, 'whatever is counter, original, spare, strange', and show you its beauty and relevance. My niches are very niche, but my themes are universal. I think I can make you laugh, and I hope I can make you think.

And I self-publish because I want the proof to be in the pudding. Please tell me what you think of it.

I love Trollope but don't know the Palliser novels. I loved the array of female characters he set up, and thought it was going to be a splendid feminist triumph, but they largely submitted to Wiser Men in the end. Mrs Greenow, however...
