Sound design on ROY’S WORLD is complete!
Alex Inglizian, Rob Christopher, and John Otterbacher at Experimental Sound Studios, Chicago, 30 August 2019.
Completing a beautifully calibrated sound design for the film is something that thrills me to my soul. Alex and I created two mixes: one is stereo and one is 5.1 surround. The first one is for streaming and video, the latter is for theatrical presentations. Both are quite wonderful in different ways. Though I’m definitely partial to the 5.1. I think it will really allow viewers to become fully immersed in the world of the documentary.
Alex’s speed, precision, and creativity were marvelous. This guy has the stuff.
Now it’s time to marry the final picture track with the final soundtracks!

Color correction on ROY’S WORLD is complete!
Nicholas Coyle, who did such an amazing job on my previous film, has delivered the goods once again. Here’s an action shot of him doing his thing.

Since Roy’s World: Barry Gifford’s Chicago almost entirely consists of archival visuals, it was a twofold challenge. First we had to tackle a paradox: develop a consistent “feel” while somehow preserving the eclectic nature of the hundreds of different sources highlighted in the documentary. And second, we had to “touch up” every source we used, not only using “traditional” color correction techniques but also addressing the degraded, low resolution condition of many of the sources.
I’m happy to report that the end result is spectacular, and is going to look fantastic on the big (and small) screen! Stay tuned for news about our world premiere …

Alex Inglizian at Experimental Sound Studios in Chicago has begun work on the film’s sound design. After our last meeting we were strolling around the studio and found this t-shirt.

That’s a drawing by our very own animator Lilli Carré! Small, small world.
