So let's see. There are two main reasons why BED OF FLOWERS ends the way it does.

The first is that it ends in a way that I find realistic--I think that a golden boy like Charles Gavin, who has wealth, influence, and maleness on his side, would be able to make the town see things his way. I think that families schism over smaller transgressions every day; Bonny's father's whole identity was tied up in his company and Loel literally burned it to the ground. That's a lot to forgive, especially at Mr. Reed's age. And I could go on, person by person.

But there's another, more important reason. Bonny and Loel aren't fighters. They don't have a cause bigger than themselves. They're good people who do the right thing when pressed, even if it causes them pain--that's admirable. It's a lot better than nothing and they deserve to be happy. But they're not lifting a shield for anyone else. Bonny pulls a few people into her circle, but it's a small circle.

It'll be more obvious once Cordelia's story is done--because Cordelia IS a fighter. She picks tougher battles and so she'll win a different kind of victory.

The romances in this series will remain completely distinct, but I'm thinking of the characters (and themes) more as a whole. I'm hoping the HEAs will resonate with one another in an interesting way. And the protagonists won't just fall away--you'll see more of Bonny and Loel, so their story isn't completely over. (less)

Wow, I only just now saw this question... sorry for the (really abysmally slow) response.

The answer is YES I am working on a new series, I've plotted a series arc I'm excited about, and the first book is almost done. I don't have a release date and I won't until I've got my production schedule set up, but I'm hoping to have it out by the end of the year.

And yikes, apologies again for being slow. (less)

Doing what's right vs. doing what's possible

One way I keep my books interesting for myself as I write—and hopefully for you as you read—is by pushing my characters into a moral crisis. The No Better Angles series was about heroines who ventured into morally gray areas. But Sweetness and Light is a series about good people who want to do good things. So the conflict arises when choosing one good means giving up another. My heroines still arr

"A few quinquennia ago, I read a reprint of English gadfly Robert Byron's 1937 book The Road to Oxiana , about his travels a few years earlier to the Middle East. By the time I'd finished, I felt the same way this book made me feel: simultaneously " Read more of this review »

This book might be interesting if the author had realized she was writing an expose about packaged tours instead of an expose about North Korea. Almost every word reflects the pitfalls of packaged tours--the constant grousing about which restaurants ...more
Erin Satie added a status update: Feels less like a book about North Korea than a chronicle of what happens when people who strongly dislike one another are forced to spend a lot of time together. It's such a shallow, airless account--revolves around a 10 day trip--& there's not even much real insight about the few people she spends significant time with, her handlers. Just resentment.

“Breakfast was all about possibilities. No other meal allowed for so much choice—sweet or savory, light or heavy? Tea or coffee? And while enjoying the fruit of these decisions, the whole day waited, unsullied, to be filled up like a plate.”

“I disappeared inside my love of him. I lost myself to it, and I didn’t want to come back.”

“And now?”

“I feel like a part of me has died.”
