He joked that hormones must cause superpowers, and I joked back that if they do, menopausal women would have the corner on that market!

And, YES! The sequel is in edits right now, with a planned release of April 20, 2016. Change of Life picks up a few months after the end of the first book, with Jessica and Leonel having joined a super-secret underground group called The Department and Patricia on a woman-hunt for Cindy Liu. (less)

Beyond that, I'm trying to leave myself open to serendipity. While I love my books clubs because of the camaraderie and discussions, and because, with a sense of deadline I *make* time to read even when I'm very busy, I also like just picking what appeals to me on any given day.

Just another month or so of school, then I'm on that lovely summer break schedule with much more time for reading!(less)

Why I NaNoWriMo

A writer friend asked me the other day why I would bother with NaNoWriMo. She meant it as a compliment since I'm a "real writer" now. "Isn't every month novel-writing month for you?" she asked.
She has a point. I write every day, come hell or high water. My daily writing chain is now over six years long and along the way I've seen three novels through to publication and written three others that I hope... Read more of this blog post »

This was a re-read for me. I read it first when I was an Alaska-obsessed child, who was reading everything my library had that had any connection to the state. I loved it then.

Now I'm a lot older, and I lived in Nome, Alaska for a decade or so mysel

This is an odd sort of book.

It's part biography of an interesting creative, Milicent Patrick (the reason I picked it up). She really was interesting! Wish I could have known her!

I've long been a fan of Lamott's nonfiction, and even though a fair amount of that has been essays about writing fiction, I'd never actually read any of her fiction. I'm afraid I probably won't be coming back for more after this one.

Samantha Bryant, Going Through The Change

“Sometimes, Helen felt like she had spent her whole life waiting to be “old enough” and then had crossed over into “too old” without finding out what it was she had been waiting for. It was only now, with the tingle of fire still on her fingertips and the smell of sulphur on her skin, that she felt she knew what she wanted.”
Samantha Bryant, Going Through The Change

“It seemed a waste to have this power and not use it to make the world better somehow. When she had been the small and weak one, how often had she wished that the strong would stand up for her? Now, she was the strong.”
Samantha Bryant, Going Through The Change
