I’ve read several interview’s you’ve done and I read despite initial interest in your book it took almost two years to be published. Was this disheartening? How did you deal with it and what other avenues did you then have to pursue to finally get it published. What were the greatest bits of advice and knowledge you gained throughout that time?

The road to publication was kind of complicated for me (though I suspect it is for lots of authors, to be honest!) And it was disheartening, to be very frank. I was crushed when I was told the publishing house wouldn't be going ahead with the book, despite having told me many times how great it was (and the fact that it was already written, at their request!). The publishing house did not handle it well and I was incredibly upset. I found It hard to get going again but my husband, who is my biggest cheerleader and just the best person ever, told me I had to get over myself eventually and so I did. I capitalised on the connections I had made during that first attempt at publishing, and that's how I got this book deal. It was hard seeing other writers who I knew personally being published by that first house and thinking, "ah, that could have been meeeeee!" But in the end, things actually worked out for the absolute best. I'm with a smaller publisher now, Nero Books, which is an imprint of Black Inc, a Melbourne-based publisher with an amazing track record and a small team of incredibly hard-working, highly skilled professionals who (super-importantly!) want to see my book succeed. So it actually worked out so, so well. (less)

OK, so I'll admit it: I do not have a writing "process." I just try to get it done. Sometimes I have a whole weekend (so rare! so beautiful!) but often I'll have an hour here or there and I just have to sit and do it. I actually think that not having huge amounts of spare time can be helpful - what's that line about needing a good idea and not quite enough time to complete it in? I work well under the pressure of a deadline - give me too much time and I won't quite get my skates on.
When I am writing, I like it to be quiet and I absolutely cannot have my phone around. It is my Achilles heel, my kryptonite, my bad boyfriend. I do have to have water and a shit-ton of coffee. (less)

AKA I'm writing a sequel! Wanted to share the good news with y'all - I am writing the sequel to She's Having Her Baby, and it's due to be published in April 2016. Which means that it is due to my editor in October 2015. Which means that I'd better go write it.
