Wisconsin native Jess Riley spent much of her childhood being punished for lying and/or passing notes during class, both of which qualified her for a possible future as a novelist. She won her first short story contest in high school for a tale told through the point of view of a seven-year-old black boy living in Cabrini Green because as a middle-class white teenager, she knew a lot about that kind of life.

Jess has been a waitress, a blue cheese packager, and a school grant writer. She worked at a toy store during the Tickle Me Elmo craze and lived to tell about it. She's also worked at a medium-security men's prison, which was much less stressful. Jess graduated from UW-Oshkosh in 1998 with degrees in English and History. She shares a dr

I Once Was Lost ...

Last weekend my college roommates and I rented a house in Door County—I hadn’t seen two of them in over two years, and it was such a lovely reunion. I haven’t laughed that hard in months…maybe years. I love these amazing women, and I’m so grateful we met (nearly 30 years ago!)
We're down one due to Covid--boo!
We parted on Sunday, and the weather was mild enough that I decided to take a hike at Read more of this blog post »

Count the Ways by Joyce Maynard
"Utterly wonderful and enthralling and, I might add, beautifully edited. (I sent a copy to my 85-year-old mother for her birthday and she told me that as she neared the end, she purposefully read slower and slower because she didn't want it to end. "W" Read more of this review »

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
"I finished this novel more than two months ago, and it still hasn't left me. And I still haven't found anything intelligent to say about it that hasn't already been said. It's extraordinarily powerful. Devastating. Illuminating. Authentic. Harrowing." Read more of this review »

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
"I read this novel when it was first published in 2018 and I was gobsmacked by how spectacular every moment was -- and by the rich panorama Rebecca Makkah created of Chicago in the 1980s and Paris in 2015.

I was so enamored with it and I missed the cha" Read more of this review »

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
"This will come across as hyperbolic, but I really believe Rebecca Makkai has written The Great American Novel about the ‘80s AIDS epidemic. In this sweeping, brilliant book, she has masterfully captured what it must have been like to endure the terro" Read more of this review »

“It’s only physical, she reminded herself. Just lust. Some kind of twisted, mutual escape valve. And those physical things, with no love or respect or loyalty to bind and preserve them, had a short shelf life. They were limited-time offers. Three months, tops.”
Jess Riley, Mandatory Release

“I want to move to the mountains. I want to live in a little cabin next to a towering, tenacious mountain fourteen thousand feet above sea level and eat a bowl of raisin bran every morning in its shadow.”
Jess Riley, Driving Sideways
