Schools grapple with obligations to migrants in shelters
[image error]
Schools grapple with obligations to migrants in shelters:
While a government contractor bears responsibility for educating children at the highly guarded center, local school officials say they stepped up partly because of a law that calls on school systems to educate any child, anywhere within their district.
Brownsville Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas said she felt a responsibility to honor the spirit of a 1982 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that affirmed all children in the United States are entitled to enroll in their local public school district for a free education.
Zendejas said the district also has an obligation to work around the troubling circumstances of such a vulnerable population of children, just as the law enforces for homeless children. She said her school district is well-equipped and willing to handle the important task, and ready to provide teachers and special education, bilingual and support services.
“The question of who gets educated in our country is coming up and my belief is everybody should receive an education if you are in this country,” Zendejas said.

Are Jews white? A judge tries to answer the question in a messy lawsuit.
A recent judicial ruling defining Jewish as a protected race follows a long and often ugly history.
Surprise: Ashkenazi Jews Are Genetically European
After being denied a job because he was heredity Jewish in spite of having converted to Christianity Bonadona sued. Some Jewish people are offended by the lawsuit and the ruling.
***”
The judge ruled last month that Bonadona had been discriminated against because of his Jewish lineage, deciding that he was part of a protected “race” under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. For some Jewish people, it did not feel like a victory. The regional branch of the Anti-Defamation League released a statement in February while the case was ongoing: “ADL is deeply offended by the perception of Jews as a race found in both allegations against the College and the plaintiff’s assertions in the lawsuit.” After the decision, David Barkey of the ADL called it a “double-edged sword.”
Surprise: Ashkenazi Jews Are Genetically European
[image error]
The origin of the Ashkenazi Jews, who come most recently from Europe, has largely been shrouded in mystery. But a new study suggests that at least their maternal lineage may derive largely from Europe.
Though the finding may seem intuitive, it contradicts the notion that European Jews mostly descend from people who left Israel and the Middle East around 2,000 years ago. Instead, a substantial proportion of the population originates from local Europeans who converted to Judaism, said study co-author Martin Richards, an archaeogeneticist at the University of Huddersfield in England.
Sephardic, Ashkenazic, Mizrahi and Ethiopian Jews
The Jewish world is more ethnically and racially diverse than many people realize.
For most Americans, traditional Jewish culture summons up images of Passover seders with steaming bowls of matzah ball soup, black-hatted, pale-skinned Hasidic men, and Yiddish-speaking bubbes (grandmothers) and zeydes (grandfathers). In reality, these snapshots represent only one Jewish ethnic group — Ashkenazi — of many.
Worldwide, Jews from distinct geographic regions vary greatly in their diet, language, dress, and folk customs. Most pre-modern Diaspora communities are categorized into three major ethnic groups (in Hebrew, sometimes called eidot, “communities”):
Mizrahim

Ashkenazim, the Jews of Germany and Northern France (in Hebrew, Ashkenaz)
Sephardim, the Jews of Iberia (in Hebrew, Sepharad) and the Spanish diaspora
Mizrahim, or Oriental Jews

Mizrahi Jews, Mizrahim, also referred to as Edot HaMizrach (Communities of the East), Bene HaMizrah (“Sons of the East”), or Oriental Jews, are descendants of local Jewish communities in the Middle East from biblical times into the modern era. They include descendants of Babylonian Jews and Mountain Jews from modern Iraq, Syria, Bahrain, Kuwait, Dagestan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Uzbekistan, the Caucasus, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan. Yemenite Jews, as well as North African Jews are sometimes also included, but their histories are separate from Babylonian Jewry.
Sephardi Jews, also known as Sephardic Jews or Sephardim (The Jews of Spain), originally from Sepharad, Spain or the Iberian peninsula, are a Jewish ethnic division. They established communities throughout areas of modern Spain and Portugal, where they traditionally resided, evolving what would become their distinctive characteristics and diasporicidentity, which they took with them in their exile from Iberia beginning in the late 15th century to North Africa, Anatolia, the Levant, Southeasternand Southern Europe, as well as the Americas, and all other places of their exiled settlement, either alongside pre-existing co-religionists, or alone as the first Jews in new frontiers.
Are Jews White?
Trump’s election has reopened questions that have long seemed settled in America—including the acceptability of open discrimination against minority groups.

Vincent D’Onofrio asks Twitter to weigh in on whether playing an ‘irredeemable racist’ is constructive – The Verge
[image error]
What responsibility do actors have in the current social climate?
I wanted to be an actor in high school but the one time classmates were to cast each other in roles I was cast as a maid. I of course, dominated the scene, so much so that my teacher chastise the class for not looking beyond race in casting their productions. This issue isn’t as prevalent as it was when Hattie McDaniel won her Oscar but it hasn’t gone away. (Hattie McDaniel was cast as a maid 74 times before her death.)
While the reaction to D’Onofrio question seems to been mixed about the role most people seem to be shocked by his even having a dilemma. Yet, I would propose that this dilemma is something most actors of color are faced with everytime they’re asked to read for a part. While the issues that actors of color are dealing with may not revolve around social climate of the time the issues that they struggle with are just as relevant “prejudiced perception” or caricatures of people of color. Just something to think about.
*****
Discourse on social media tends to follow a pattern. When it comes to Hollywood, the cycle starts with a casting announcement or a new trailer or a movie release — some high-level choice is publicized. Depending on the politics or representation involved, fans and critics react on social media and news sites with either celebration or vehement backlash. Sometimes Hollywood responds; mostly it doesn’t. Then we wait for the next choice to be made. As consumers in this era, our relationship to art tends to be reactive because we’re not privy to the decision-making process, much less the internal struggle an actor might face when deciding whether or not to sign onto a potentially controversial project. Over the weekend, Daredevil actor Vincent D’Onofrio subverted that pattern by opening up a discussion on Twitter about whether or not he should take a role — specifically, that of a real-life “irredeemable racist.”

Antoine Fuqua On Calls For Diversity In Film Criticism: ‘I Try Not To Think About That As Much’
[image error]
While Antoine Fuqua may not grasp why there’s a need for more diversity among film critics other actors do. One such actor is Brie Larson who made the following observation,
“What I am saying is that if you make a movie that is a love letter to women of color, there is an insanely low chance a woman of color will have the chance to see your movie and review your movie…We need to be conscious of our bias and make sure that everyone is in the room.”
As a woman of color and of the #AfricanDiaspora I think that this need for diversity among film critics is a much bigger issue than most people understand. As one example, the way women of color are portrayed in movies is usually a caricature of what people of other races deem to be a woman of color and is not authentic. Yet this version of women of color, however false, is what we continue to see in movies. Until we have criticism of these caricatures as part of the film plot there will be no changes to this lazy form of screenwriting.
Pennsylvania priests’ sexual abuse detailed in grand jury report – CNN
****
The new grand jury report says that internal documents from six Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania show that more than 300 “predator priests” have been credibly accused of sexually abusing more than 1,000 child victims.
“We believe that the real number of children whose records were lost or who were afraid ever to come forward is in the thousands,” the grand jury report says.
“Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades. Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, cardinals have mostly been protected; many, including some named in this report, have been promoted. Until that changes, we think it is too early to close the book on the Catholic Church sex scandal.”
The lengthy report, released Tuesday afternoon, investigates clergy sexual abuse in six dioceses dating back to 1947. Pennsylvania’s two other dioceses, Philadelphia and Altoona-Johnstown, were the subjects of earlier grand jury reports, which found similarly damaging information about clergy and bishops in those dioceses.
