Aspiring writers should build in plenty of time to read and re-read their work and feel comfortable with changing or cutting content that does not fit the whole. It is also good to consider the big picture goals of a book and the specific goals of each chapter. Finally, find a colleague or friend (not too good of a friend) who will provide you with honest feedback on a manuscript before it is finalized and submitted to a press. (less)

The book will be published by NYU Press in 2019. I combine personal interviews, immigration law, policy analysis, and case studies to answer the following research questions: 1) what does immigration enforcement and discretion look like in the time of Trump?; 2) who is impacted by changes to immigration enforcement and discretion in the time of Trump?; 3) how have individuals and families impacted by immigration enforcement under President Trump changed their own perceptions about the future?; and 4) how do those informed about immigration enforcement and discretion describe immigration enforcement and discretion in the age of Trump and perceive the future? In the final chapter, I offer recommendations that are rooted in my own research and personal experiences and are further influenced by suggestions from government officials and advocates/attorneys interviewed for this book.
