As I continued researching, it became clear that it needed to be told, as it was of great historical value. The challenge became how to tell it. I decided to write a novel to use creativity in areas where there was simply no information available. I explain further in the "Author's Notes" section at the end of the book.(less)

I make sure when I return I am in a quiet place, at night or early in the morning when everyone at home is asleep. Sometimes, I do continue thinking during the day about how to break the block. I even keep a notebook by my bed in case I come up with an idea while sleeping. Crazy, but it has happened before, and I do not want to miss the opportunity, if it comes up! I also write "around the block," e.g., scenes that I know will take place anyways.(less)

Losing My Head

Viseu Cathedral, Portugal

Alonso lifted the curtain to steal a look. The extant rays of sundown peered through the window, bathing his face in glitter and setting his eyes on fire. His gaze froze on the outside through the thin cloth shade, a veil over embers of despair. Alonso turned his back on the light and approached his brother. Simon sat on the bed of the small chamber the brothe

She suffered from catalepsy. In medieval Spain, she would likely be dead to the world and buried alive.

“Pardon me for this resolution … I know that this will be a disgrace that I bring to my people, but I cannot help it. Love is the blame for it. I go in peace ... pray for me ... good-bye all.”

“In 1932, Albizu Campos unveiled a racist letter Dr. Cornelius P. Rhoads wrote in 1931 to his colleague Fred W. Stewart, confessing to humanitarian crimes the doctor performed against his Puerto Rican patients. “They are beyond doubt the dirtiest, laziest, most degenerate and thievish race of men ever inhabiting this sphere. It makes you sick to inhabit the same island with them. They are even lower than Italians,” Dr. Rhoads wrote. “What the island needs is not public health work but a tidal wave or something to totally exterminate the population… I have done my best to further the process of extermination by killing off 8 and transplanting cancer into several more,” he confessed.”
