Real Talk - Transformations with Kettlebells and Community - Weight Gain after an Eating Disorder
This is the first time I’ve ever shared a story of someone who suffered from an eating disorder and was proud of their weight gain.
This story was shared with me yesterday by a member who lives in Sweden. I asked if I could share her story. She was so kind to say yes.
It brought tears to my eyes.
This openness and change, is what Lauren’s Playground is all about.
This is what community and Kettlebell training can do.
It can bring your body to where it needs to be! Your mind and soul!
Doors close tomorrow and your price will always stay at the lower rate you join. We won’t open until Fall. Would LOVE to show you the way it’s done so you can have the same success as both our members and myself!

Ground Zero Kettlebell Workshop (Part 2)

Due to popular demand from the students in Ground Zero Kettlebell Workshop Part 1 series, we are offering a Part 2 to learn new skills and deepen our kettlebell lifting and movement patterns. There is no better time than now to bring you an interactive 2 week starter workshop you can do right from your own home. For the second time ever in history I will be doing a live training series in real time virtually. I will be taking a limited group size in order to be able to give specific feedback for every single person who participates.
SIGN UP HERE
This is a LIVE 2 week training, consisting of 6 mini meet up lessons via Zoom, with you and others from around the world. This simple training will put you on the path from ground zero to hero. By the end of the 2 weeks you will have the confidence to use your kettlebell(s) and body to do amazing workouts that will help you get to your fitness goals.
What does Ground Zero mean?
Ground Zero means that you are starting from scratch or/and need to completely recalibrate your movement patterns to get the most out of your training with kettlebells. Even if you have experience, but are unsure if you're doing it correctly, or if something hurts you, this will be the place to start.
Why train with Kettlebells? If you're reading this you must know the full body transformative nature of how kettlebells have completely changed peoples lives. Not only does this training get you stronger and more conditioned in record time, a few kettlebells hardly take up any room. You can do this training almost any where.
Going from very weak to extremely strong, from in pain to no pain, from unhappy and no confidence to having a purpose and feeling on top of the world. From zero connection with others to new kettlebell buddies. Really, kettlebell training is so much more than achieving an amazing powerful and strong body. The mind change has been extraordinary. The transformations are truly mind boggling. You can read real stories here.
If I didn't participate in Part 1 can I still sign up for Part 2?
Yes you can still sign up. You will be learning slightly more detailed exercises such as the Turkish Get Up, 1 Arm Swings, Hand 2 Hand Swings, Mobility, and building upon exercises we did in Part 1. You will have a chance to take Part 1 after Part 2 if you'd like to get started right away and not wait until the next Part 1.
How do I know if this Part 2 Beginner Series is right for me?
This Live Workshop Series is Designed For the Following People:
1. **Never touched a kettlebell due to fear of doing it incorrectly and desperately needs detailed guidance.** (start with Part 1 if you are saying yes to this question)
2. Been doing Kettlebells on and off for years and would like to make sure each basic movement pattern is correct.
3. Went through a major change or had a previous injury and need to re-start Kettlebell training again very carefully with caution.
4. Have never worked with a coach and would like the opportunity to work with others and get real time feedback.
5. Needs accountability and connection with others while learning something completely new, especially during the lockdown.
6. Kettlebell Fitness Instructors who wants to improve their own teaching methods for the beginners.
7. The person who struggles with accountability and will only show up to a teaching with an investment and a physical start time. Videos and online programs will always be there, but once the live class is done, it's done.
8. To the kettlebell enthusiast who wants to clean up and hone in on their form and take it as deep as humanly possible. The basic lifts will be slowed down significantly, with a variety of techniques from my arsenal, to where no one is left behind.
9. To the person who feels so out of shape and desperately needs a safe place to start.
Who is this workshop NOT FOR?
1. This series is not designed for someone who isn't willing to participate by not having their live video set up on them during the workshop times. If I can't see your whole body, I can't help you with feedback. There is no time for FEAR anymore. Many are scared out of their minds to have videos on them. Pretend that we are all in the same room. We will be doing some breakout sessions where you get to work with a partner. You are not ALONE! We have many different shape size bodies and each size is beautiful. This is for the person who is going to set their fears aside of caring what others think, be brave, to get to the next level.
2. Expects immediate results and wants a quick fix, without putting the work in. If you're the kind of person who thinks showing up one time is going to transform your body from the habits you've had all of your life, this is not the series for you. Habits are a life commitment otherwise you're wasting your time and my time. If you're not willing to dedicate and focus during our 6 30-45 minute sessions, which will change your training forever (if you stick with it), this is not the right path for you.
3. If you're unable to commit and show up to most of the 6 timed sessions. No refunds will be given as you will be taking someones spot.
If this workshop sounds like just the kick in the pants you need to get going, now is the time to snag your spot. Remember I'm not opening this up to an unlimited amount of spots so I can get detailed with each and everyone of you. You will know each others name by the end of the 2 weeks. You may make some friends. Most of all you will have confidence in your basic beginning exercises. What Equipment do I need?
I highly recommend you have a minimum of 1 Kettlebell. If you're just getting started a 6kg, 8kg, 10kg, or 12kg is recommended depending on how strong you are. If you don't have access to a kettlebell now but are adamant of seizing this opportunity you can use a water jug, dumbbell, or body weight. It would be best to have a kettlebell due to the swing and clean exercise we will be covering in detail. A device that allows video on your Phone, ipad, laptop, Desktop. Test it out and find a place where you can move so I can see you ideally from head to toe during practice sessions. Get creative or you can find some cheap tripods or set it up to your ideal training space. We've had people training in their kitchens, hallways, bedrooms, backyards, drive ways, living rooms, garage. The more creative the better. Do what you need to do.
I'M READY! I'd like to grab my spot before you fill up! When does it start?

The Body Tune-Up Program
The Body Tune-Up workout program is now available in Lauren's Playground. Wooohooo! These were personally requested by Playground students so I'm very excited to finally release it.
The sessions in this program were created specifically designed around how we are all feeling with uncertainty and isolation. The longing for more serenity, flow, stretch, strength, and movement is bundled inside this little program.
Yes we have a TON of programs to choose from in Lauren's Playground, but this one has a theme of now. The theme of needing workouts to help us, when being sheltered in place and maybe feeling higher stress and anxiety.
Excited to bring this one to you. Luckily this grassy part of the park wasn't closed so we were able to film half of the workouts at this beautiful open location by our house.
Playground members you can access this workout right now here.

Perspective on the Coronavirus
My dad, who is in his 70's, currently works full time as an attorney in the Los Angeles area. Here is what he wrote.
Putting Coronavirus Time of our Lives into Perspective
By Michael Brooks
When my daughter Lauren sent me her email about living in interesting times, I was so impressed with her openness and love, especially for the people whose lives she touches, that I offered to write something about her grandparents who went through the second world war in England. I asked her if she thought it would help to put this Coronavirus time of our lives into perspective. She jumped at it. So what follows here are just a few of my memories of my parents experiences during the second world war.
So why talk about WW2 at all! Because for those of us who have not yet come to realize it, this is war! In one way, I hope that I did not scare you. In another way I hope that I did. People need to take this seriously. I have heard so many youngsters saying that getting the virus is inevitable so might as well just get it and get over it. Well, maybe you will get over it, but maybe you will also unknowingly bring it home to your mother who may have asthma or your grandpa who may just be too old to fight it. You will kill them. Harsh words? You had better believe it. Or maybe you will just be sick enough to be hospitalized and be the lucky one to get the respirator and survive. And since there won't be enough respirators to go around, grandpa in the bed next to you won't get one and will be left to die. For those of you who think I'm being too dramatic. Think again!
When WW2 broke out, my parents were 16 years old. My mother worked as a secretary in the Admiralty. They lived in a densely populated area of London. My father eventually went into the army. Time passed, and my mother was told that she was going to be a Navy girl. She refused and said she wanted to be in the land army. Most Americans do not know what the land army is. The British Isles were cut off from other countries and Europe was occupied by the Nazis. Much food and other necessaries were shipped. The Nazis wanted to starve the British so they sank the supply ships with U-boats. They were deadly. So the British rolled up their sleeves and turned Britain into a giant farm. They needed workers. Thus the land army was born. I think they were all volunteers. Mostly girls. Teenagers. They were not soldiers, but sometimes those farms became the front lines and those brave girls did their share of dying too. You see, when the German bombers went to the cities to bomb them, they had fighter escorts; Messershmits and Stukas. After bombing the cities, while on their way back to occupied France, the German pilots sometimes saw the girls working in the fields. They strafed them with machine gun fire. Yes. They killed unarmed teenage girls growing potatoes, shooting from the air with machine guns. They also bombed the farm houses. My mother told me that she was at the top of the stairs in the farm house when a bomb made a direct hit on it. The blast threw her down the stairs. Fortunately she was not badly injured but told me that she noticed one white hair in her head after that.
Perspective? No one is bombing us or strafing us with machine gun fire.
My parents told me that every night during the war they had to hang blackout curtains so that the German planes could not see lights. They bombed where they saw a light.
Perspective? We do not have to hang blackout curtains.
The German bombers were relentless. Some of you have heard of the blitz. This was nighttime bombing raids against London and other cities from September 1940 - May 1941. Between 40,000 - 42,000 civilians were killed, about half in London, and 2 million houses destroyed or damaged. My grandparents were bombed out. That's an English expression for having to leave a now uninhabitable house because it was bombed.
Perspective? You are not being bombed out of your house. You are being told to remain in it. Anyway, the British resolve was too strong. And in spite of the deaths, injuries, lack of medical help, and all around terrible conditions, the Germans failed. Why? Because the British stood together.
My parents told me that for weeks on end their diet was bread, jam and some cheese. You want an egg? Look for it on the black market, if you can find it! You want a chicken? Raise your own!
Perspective? So you wait a few days for eggs to come into the store or get a pizza delivered. Or maybe you won't get your favorite latte for a while. Not such a big sacrifice.
We over 70's most probably either fought in WW2 or know someone who did. I know we have many vets who fought in other wars: Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. I talk about WW2 because this is war at home. This war is in my country, in my city, on my block, and in my house and in my neighbor's house. It is also on my planet. It is a world war. To me this is WW3. Here's the difference. This enemy does not care about your race, your age, your sexual identity, your political preferences, your country affiliation or your religion. It does not care whether you are a meat eater, a vegan, a vegetarian or on one of the seemingly 100 or so diets going around. It does not care if you are white, black, or some color in between. It does not care what language you speak. This enemy only cares that you are human. It is an equal opportunity invader.
Perspective? WW2 had the axis powers against the Allies. Covid-19 is the axis. Humans are the allies. Humans helping humans is how we win.
In WW2, metal gates, doors and fences were being torn out and made into bullets and other war related necessities. Factories that made one product turned to make guns and tanks and planes.
Perspective? I heard that car companies are going to make respirators. Other companies will be making masks. Labs are ramping up to look for a vaccine or a medicine to fight the coronavirus.
I spoke to my neighbor who is a few years older than I. I'll call her Janet to protect her identity. She has family in England. I called and asked her if she was okay and had everything she needed. We talked a bit about WW2 and how she thought we seniors were more equipped to deal with the hardships than the younger generation. Mostly because we heard it from our parents. We heard enough stories of the deprivations and the stress of being bombed nightly not knowing when it was your turn to be hit We talked about being hungry and cold and sometimes bombed onto the streets. We also talked about victory because our parents generation were in the same boat, went about their business and stood together against a common enemy. They were not, the me me or me first generation. They were the, what can I do to make things better for you generation. What little they had they shared. Selfishness was not tolerated. Sacrifice was honored.
Time has brought us great leaders. Winston Churchill was one. I am reminded of his famous, we will fight them on the beaches...speech. I am also reminded of the signal sent by Vice Admiral of the Royal Navy, Horatio Nelson, from the HMS Victory as the Battle of Trafalgar was about to commence on 21 October 1805. He said,"England expects that every man will do his duty." How about we update that to "The world expects that every human will do their duty." Just a suggestion.
After hanging up, I called another neighbor originally from Iran to say hi and just to chat about us all being in this together. She told me that she had already spoken to Janet to check on her. She also said if I needed something just to call her since she has to go out a lot.
A few minutes ago, while I was writing this, one of my co-workers called me and told me that she needed to go on a necessary shopping trip and she could pick some milk and eggs up for me if I needed them.
With people like this, I put the chance of winning the war at 100%
Perspective? Well, you know.

The Get Up - Develop Super Strong Shoulder and Lats
It’s no secret that Get Ups can build insanely solid strong shoulders and lats. Adding an overhead squat is just a bonus.
I know Get Ups can look intimidating to the newbies out there. This is why I only teach a portion of the Get Up to my new students and without any load. The Get Up also helps open up your hips and does strengthen the entire body. It teaches focus and awareness.
This is one of the reasons I created an entire ebook/video program called the Ultimate Get Up Guide. This is one I offer to the public as well as have it inside Lauren’s Playground.
If you need the Get Up broken down in a simple and easy to follow format you can access it inside Lauren’s Playground here when you’re a member. Sign up before doors close on Monday.
Or purchase it separately here

Farmers Walks - One of the most beneficial exercises you can do for your body
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Lauren Brooks (@laurenbrooksfitness) on Feb 11, 2020 at 2:26pm PST
Farmers Walks or Farmer Carries anyone?
Nothing new. Been around for years on end and one of the most under utilized simple exercises you can possibly do. I’m gonna list the benefits below of this diamond of an exercise.
There’s a reason why the most recognized strength coaches on this planet such as Dan John and Brooks Kubik have their athletes do these regularly. Brooks Kubik said “The farmers walk is one of the most productive of all exercises.”
Now for the Benefits
Increased postural strength and control. Basically what I’m saying is this drill helps your spine and tissues around it to become strong AF (as freak).
Increases your metabolism, burns fat, and builds dense muscle mass. .Increases your Grip Strength like no other.
Core Stabilization and Bracing which translates over in to every strength lift and real life.
The heavy carrying also grounds you deeper to the earth and helps keep you feel centered.
You can get super creative with Farmer walks. Uneven bells, one bell, bottoms up carry, rack walks, overhead carries... so many ideas and simple as heck!
Not to mention carrying heavy weights makes you feel kinda gangsta.
