Chuck Wendig has a great answer for this, and I agree with him: writer's block is an excuse that masks another underlying cause.

If I find I'm not coming up with anything on a particular chapter or scene, I switch to another one. There's no rule that says you have to write a novel in order from beginning to end. If something is repeatedly blocking me, it's usually a sign of a problem with the story. My favorite parts of Winterwakers all came to me very quickly and naturally. If I don't get that natural flow, I take a step back and think about alternatives that don't feel as forced.(less)

Don't be an aspiring writer. Just write. You're either a writer or you aren't. Just do it. You have nothing to lose.

Assume that the first thing you write is going to be complete shit. Assume that for the second and third things as well. Even when you start to get good at it, you'll write some awful garbage from time to time. That's part of the process. The sooner you let go of the notion that everything you create has to be perfect, the sooner you'll actually finish a book. That thing you think is an amazing idea today might end up in the trash next month. So be it. It's not the only idea you'll ever have.(less)

We’re coming up on the two-year anniversary of the publication ofWinterwakers Part 1: Cold Hands, the book that kicked off both theWinterwakersseries and my writing career. What started as an experiment to see if I couldactually do this has turned into a new phase of my life, one that will continue for as long as I can make it work.

To coincide with this anniversary, I’ve shuffled some of my sa...

Albert Camus
“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.”
Albert Camus

Richard Adams
“Many human beings say that they enjoy the winter, but what they really enjoy is feeling proof against it.”
Richard Adams, Watership Down

John Green
“Without pain, how could we know joy?' This is an old argument in the field of thinking about suffering and its stupidity and lack of sophistication could be plumbed for centuries but suffice it to say that the existence of broccoli does not, in any way, affect the taste of chocolate.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

Frank Herbert
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Frank Herbert, Dune
