Prayer for Advent

PRAYER: Lord, in this season of Advent, like the last weeks of a pregnant Mary, we wait eagerly for the celebration of Your coming. We prepare our hearts by focusing on You each day, intentionally and fully.

We focus on how You came, after centuries of being foreshadowed and promised, as the final sacrifice under a system that could roll sins forward but never provide freedom.
We focus on how You humbled Yourself, and through that humility, You established a kingdom, with a place of...

Why I Do It All (and the Order I Do It)

So Pinterest (which is alternately a minion from the pits of hell that makes me feel inadequate OR a gift from the heavens that makes my life better, depending on the day) has these awesome prayer journals and scripture journals in which people who are way more artistic and creative than me depict their spiritual growth in ways that tilt Pinterest into the minion category.
Look at this ridiculousness:

And now look at mine:

Yep, definitely minion status today. Think I'll stick to writing.
BUT, eve...

Overwhelmed {When Your Blessings are Just Too Much}

You're reading this because you're stressed out.

You've been burning the candle at both ends until you're exhausted and the list of things you have to do never seems to get shorter.  Or maybe it's all just so much that you've been avoiding even getting started by leaning into your particular escapes (TV, internet, reading, friends). Or maybe some of both.
You are frustrated at the whole situation and scared you will fail and worried you won't meet people's expectations and mad at t...

Kids of Faith, Not Conformity

The pastor of a small town church sat across the table from me. His words poured life into me in the most unlikely of places - our family camping trip. He was the chaplain of the state park and I was the only one who showed up for Sunday morning church in the amphitheater. But God-ordained moments don't need crowds.

Of all the Scripture and wisdom he shared, of all that I've chewed on since then, today it is something he said in passing, something that related to something else, that strikes a...

Stir Up Hope, Not Fear {A Link to a Prayer}

If you've been afraid lately, and the enemy has been helping to stir up fear, read this.

And remember, fear and God... they don't go together.  He has not given us a spirit of fear, and His perfect love casts out all fear. He has given us a hope and a future!

Walk in the blessing of hope today!

What You Really "Deserve" After Your Hard Day (or Week, or Year)

Too often, we get ourselves in a mess because, as T.D. Jakes says, we want to "comfort rather than confront" what's wrong.

We turn to wrong people and things and sex and food and alcohol and shopping with money we don't have because we are comforting what's wrong rather than dealing with it and baring our souls and letting the Lord heal us.

The words "I deserve it" - and we've all said it! - are the enemy of His very best for us. We eat an extra cookie (or box of cookies!), dri...

4 Ways to Serve Your God, Not Your Stuff

We like our stuff.  The mini-storage industry is proof of that, along with our overstuffed and over-sized garages and houses and sheds and attacks and closets.  We need more room to put our stuff!

But there's nothing inherently wrong with having stuff.  Americans are constantly criticized for our excess and for having too much, but that isn't the real problem. The problem is when you begin to serve your stuff more than you serve your God.  God doesn't care how much you have...
