Tarn Richardson is the author of The Darkest Hand trilogy, published by Duckworth Overlook in Europe and Australia, and Overlook Press in the US and Canada.

Consisting of THE HUNTED (free prequel novella), THE DAMNED (2015), THE FALLEN (2016) and THE RISEN (2017), The Darkest Hand trilogy unleashes the flawed but brilliant Inquisitor Poldek Tacit upon a Europe engulfed by the First World War. The Damned was one of the Book Depository's 'Books of 2015'.

Having grown up in Somerset, he now lives in Salisbury with his wife, the portraiture artist Caroline Richardson.

Just don't let it beat you. Just don't give it the opportunity to dig its claws into you.

Write - just write whatever comes into your head. Don't worry if what you're writing is rubbish and you know it's rubbish. You're writing. And that's all that matters. Don't even worry about tpyos (sic) or grammar. Just get the words out, get them flowing, turning that intimidating white sheet of paper black with words and then turn it over and fill that page and turn the next over and then the next and keep going and filling them until something resembling sense and style appears in your writing. And even if it doesn't I bet that they'll be something you can use in what you've just scrawled.

Another more painful technique is go for a run - or, for the less active, a decent stomp. It's amazing what billows up from the deepest recesses of the mind when the body is made to sweat a little.

Lastly, get up at 3am and write. The writer Simon Toyne gave me this neat suggestion - and it really does work. It's amazing where your brain is at at 3am in the morning and what it is capable of. (Just write the rest of the day off afterwards!)(less)

Reflecting back on 2017. Looking forward to 2018.

This time last year I was hurtling towards the end of writing THE RISEN, the final chapter of The Darkest Hand trilogy and a project which had kept me busy for the last four and a half years.
It was a project which had taken me to France, Belgium, the National Archives in Kew, the worst weekend of my life in a clifftop caravan in Weymouth, and several years off my life, not to mention sanity, slee Read more of this blog post »
