I imagine like many in the goodreads community, I've been pretty much a lifelong booklover. The closest I ever got to paradise on earth was spending several years working as a book reviewer and editor for publishers and magazines - and having as many free books as I could manage. Bliss.

I love writing, but seem to spend more time thinking about it rather than sitting down and doing it. If I wrote, say, as often as Donald Trump insulted people, well god - I'd have more fiction published than Joyce Carol Oates, and Stephen King combined. Ahem.

My self-published short stories include:

- Darker, Still, a tale of the unexpected that looks and breathes like

Listening to music. One or more of a combo of those activities. Sooner or later, the block's gone and often the writing is better afterwards and I'm all the more grateful for getting back into the swing of things.(less)
bobbygw The joy of words, when they flow as I type. That's great. The feeling of it is terrific.

This is writing that would be perfectly at home in the fiction of Elizabeth Bowen, Katherine Anne Porter, Barbara Pym, Elizabeth Taylor, and echoes the steely intelligence and driest of wit of the inimitable Ivy Compton-Burnett. Continue reading → Read more of this blog post »

Vladimir Nabokov
“In a sense, we are all crashing to our death from the top story of our birth ... and wondering with an immortal Alice at the patterns of the passing wall. This capacity to wonder at trifles - no matter the imminent peril - these asides of the spirit ... are the highest form of consciousness.”
Vladimir Nabokov

Noam Chomsky
“The mass media serve as a system for communicating messages and symbols to the general populace. It is their function to amuse, entertain, and inform, and to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior that will integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society. In a world of concentrated wealth and major conflicts of class interest, to fulfil this role requires systematic propaganda.”
Noam Chomsky, Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media

Noam Chomsky
“It is the responsibility of intellectuals to speak the truth and expose lies.”

Noam Chomsky
“All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.”
Noam Chomsky

bell hooks
“As all advocates of feminist politics know most people do not understand sexism or if they do they think it is not a problem. Masses of people think that feminism is always and only about women seeking to be equal to men. And a huge majority of these folks think feminism is anti-male. Their misunderstanding of feminist politics reflects the reality that most folks learn about feminism from patriarchal mass media.”
