From MSM's ongoing western highway series: this is SR 69 north, Huerano County, Colorado.
" the dendroglyphs carved by sheepherders between the late eighteenth [maybe] and mid-twentieth centuries...these here most likely the latter:

John Brinckerhoff Jackson
Looking at these images I'm thinking it's time to read John Brinckerhoff Jackson, the great interpreter of Western landscapes, again.

1950 Chevrolet 3/4 ton: the lustre of disaster.
From our man in south Saskatchewan, Alex Emond:
"Now we're pulling into Shamrock, Sask. This old Chev is really something ...takes a lickin' and keep on tickin'! Just a beast, and the chronological sheen is most impressive ... the lustre of disaster. Basically , a piece of public art. And a beast of burden...
"Kind of like this multicoloured GMC that was sticking its snout out of a hedgerow." --AE

Gary Snyder on Lew Welch
In a piece in The London Review (May 24 2012) Iain Sinclair visits Gary Snyder at home, and quotes Snyder about the cabin near the Forks of the Salmon where Lew Welch worked on his Hermit Poems and where he says Welch had achieved: "the meeting of an ancient Asian sage-tradition, the “shack simple” post-frontier back country out-of-work working man’s style, and the rebel modernism of modern art’."
