1956 Buick Special, Wichita
The interior was a wreck, and the engine's probably frozen--maybe not--and there's some rust on the rocker panels, but the rest of this Buick is in very solid shape. I hope it gets back out on the road.

William Gedney, Kentucky, Cars.

I had not seen William Gedney's work before I saw the book, What Was True: The Photographs and Notebooks of William Gedney. Gedney spent serious time with a couple of eastern Kentucky families in 1964 and again in 1972. One of the inspirations must have been Walker Evans, and the Let Us Now Praise Famous Men photographs. but it's clear that Gedney had a vision of his own. All these (except the 1959 Oldsmobile, above) are from the Kentucky series. The images are archived at Duke U. and you can find more here:

1955 Ford C-600 COE
On US 59, around Richmond, Kansas. Guy had a bunch of old heavy-duty Fords he was reorganizing. When I was a kid this was the kind of truck I dreamed about driving to the high school prom. We called them 'grad dances' in Canada. Only one I ever went to was at the Ritz-Carlton, in Montreal. Would have had trouble parking the Ford.

California Cars from Lowtech
Lowtech, the Swiss guy, has a wonderful new book out, chronicling a California trip. Looks like SB County to me. Channel Islands out there. We share his trope for profile shots...

The Speed Shop in Strong City
I went back to Chase County, Kansas to revisit my favorite speed shop, S.E. Schroer & Co, in downtown Strong City, heart of the Flint Hills. The Plymouth and the 5-window roadster were featured in a post last week. This week I heard them fire up and saw Señor Schroer hurtling around town in the roadster, which is a speed machine. He is a man with a powerful aesthetic, which you see in his cars and in his shop, where there are some intriguing works-in-progress. Man, I wish I was driving the Plymouth back to Maine...
the handle looks it it out to bring the jet thrusters on-line, but it's a reverse lock-out.

1985 C-10 Chevrolet 27k miles
Saw it in Falmouth Maine last month. As clean a 29-year-old truck as you'll find. 27k miles. Grandpa's truck, apparently, and old gent didn't get out much. Repainted but otherwise original.
