Cruising Van Nuys, 1972

Thanks to Reid Cunningham for the heads-up on these Rick McCloskey photographs.
"In the summer of 1972, photographer Rick McCloskey went to Van Nuys to shoot this series of photographs, the culture on the boulevard had become an amalgamation of various lifestyles, automobiles, and very different looks and styles. The tribes included surfers, low-riders, muscle cars, street racers, and even “retro” styles from the 1950s. McCloskey’s photos offer a fascinating portrayal of the young people, their cars, and iconic backgrounds; a world that has long since vanished.
"There were other cruising spots in the city, but Van Nuys, for some reason or other, got nailed as the street to cruise on, specifically, a 3-mile stretch from Ventura Boulevard to about Sherman Way. People would come from as far as Santa Barbara or Orange County to cruise Van Nuys, a wide street with many lanes. Gas was relatively cheap at the time, and that made cruising an affordable way to spend a night out."

1959 Ford Fairlane 500

'59 was the year. The Fairlane is listed as a "Club Sedan" on B-A-T . It's on the block today. I thought a 'sedan' was four doors; two's a coupe, is it not? We posted this '59 Ranch Wagon a while back.

Dodge Dakota Sport Convertibles

from Jonathan Welsh: "Dodge built fewer than 4,000 Dakota Sport convertible pickups from 1989 to 1991. American Sunroof Corp. cut the tops off and retrofitted vinyl roofs under contract with Chrysler so you can imagine the quality. Spotting two while walking the dog in Montclair, N.J., this morning had a once-in-a-lifetime feel."

Sweet Jeep Gladiator J-2000

from Reid Cunningham: "At a sugar shack near Bromley VT, an old warhorse still being used to collect maple sap. The last registration sticker was 2010, but the bed holds a sap tank, collection buckets and other tools of the trade."

1953 Studebaker Starlight

from Maynard Bray: Here's my 1953 Studebaker Starlight delivering our Northeast Harbor A-boat to her new owner. That same car towed that same boat from Mount Desert Island to Noank the year before. Great car and great boat! Wish I still had them both.
