I was born in the seaside town of Seaford in East Sussex. When I was 18, I moved to Colchester where I studied at the University of Essex, first as an undergraduate in the Mathematics department and then as a postgraduate in the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering where I obtained a PhD entitled "An application-oriented comparison of optimisation and neural-based design techniques", which is

At this stage, the important thing is to get ideas onto the page without interruption. Later edits will fix grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and writing slips. A plan or outline can help me get started, but if I stop to ponder over the best wording for a particular sentence, the world of the story vanishes. (I've written a little more about this in a Facebook post.) It's important to remember that the first draft is just a preliminary not the final polished version, like artists who first draw a rough pencil sketch before applying any paint. I think part of the problem with writer's block is overcoming a natural desire to write perfect prose on the first draft.(less)

I had an interesting encounter with a couple of children as I was heading back into the village after walking around the muddy footpaths and byways around the area. (This is not only setting the scenic background detail, but also noting that I might’ve had a slightly dishevelled and windswept appearance as a result.) In general, I find it a bit awkward when unknown children want to strike up a...

“It is the obvious which is so difficult to see most of the time. People say 'It's as plain as the nose on your face.' But how much of the nose on your face can you see, unless someone holds a mirror up to you?”
