After exploring the Sahara in 1980s, I wrote Desert Biking in 1993. That evolved into today's Adventure Motorcycling Handbook, now in its 6th edition. I also co-wrote several editions of Australia for Rough Guides and worked on other RG titles. Desert Travels, a Saharan travelogue came next, then Sahara Overland, Overlanders Handbook, and Morocco Overland, all for Trailblazer Guides. I also enjoy updating Trailblazer's British walking guides once in a while.
I recently reprinted Desert Travels alongside a new book: Adventures in Motorcycling, an urban motobiography paralleling the DT era of the 1980s, but telling a quite different story.

Interesting idea to follow the course of Draa from source to sea, but the staggering conceit of the book is that much of the time the author was a couple of miles from the unmentioned N9 and N12 highways. This is never allowed to intrude on what is p ...more

Forensically comprehensive history of LSD in Britain. Felt like a bit too much info at times, but the record is there for posterity.

The unapologetic and un-PC adventures of a war journalist and film maker propelling himself at life from both barrels. Would make a great movie, though the docs he shot are now online and not quite so compelling.

Must have read On the Road in my youth, but this was disappointing. For me the best parts by far were when JK was actually on the road (or on the rails) – you get a real sense of the freedom of being a hobo. But the interminable socialising with his ...more

Fascinating and well researched account of Dumas the author's heroic and courageous half-black father, his brief ascent though the army and society following the French Revolution, and his fall once Napoleon saw him as a rival. Clearly the origin of ...more

A quick read but disappointed. One way I interpreted it was as a hallucinatory guardian angle assisting the stricken pilot to survive, and once that's sorted, the angle disappears. Too dense to get or remember the moral of the story without doing a W ...more

I've come across people like Oluwasegun Oyesanya in the Sahara many, many times and had a faint hope of getting their PoV, but this self-pub'd quickie is bad as you might expect. The guy's heart is in the right place (love, peace, tolerance) but ther ...more
