Stephen Toman is starting Growing Up Dead in Texas: So far so good. Hooked. Love SGJ’s narrative voice. Having heard some podcasts with him I now read everything in his actual voice, which suits this ‘memoir’ really well, “i guess”. Also getting a Stephen King vibe from this in the first-person, writer/teacher returning home to solve a mystery cube (even though I can’t, off the top of my head, think of a specific King book with this scenario...)

Song for the Unraveling of the World by Brian Evenson
"Never failing to deliver, Evanson’s newest collection, Song for the Unraveling of the World, is a disturbing delight. Each story brings a layer of weird and unsettling flavor, weaving a sinkhole glimpse into his strange, masterful mind."

Passive voice but present tense. Present tense that’s really past. And in one instance third person is really first person. Really interesting going into this having read the “sister” book, Novi Sad, first - the repetitions of the colour blue recalli ...more

Not really sure what to say about this other than that I loved it. Love the way he writes in chunks of text, without line breaks or paragraphs or dialogue tags, but here, unlike in 2666, each chunk is a piece of flash fiction or a vignette from the p ...more
