Robert M. Detman is the author of IMPOSSIBLE LIVES OF BASHER THOMAS (Figureground Press 2014), which Publishers Weekly has called "An ambitious novel ... told in sharp prose ... layering various methods of storytelling to create a fresh and intriguing work." He has published fiction in over two dozens literary journals, including the Antioch Review, Akashic Books Thursdaze, Santa Monica Review, and elsewhere. His story collection, THE SURVIVOR'S GUIDE, was a semifinalist for the 2013 Hudson Prize from Black Lawrence Press.

There are a million ways to be a writer, not one way. So especially don’t listen to so-called “gatekeepers.” Rarely do they offer you anything useful, and they will only try to squash your enthusiasm.

The only way to become a writer is to write. Read a lot, and love what you read. If you don’t love what you read, find something you love to read. Then write something you’d love to read.
