[Interview] Cirque du Soleil’s Samuel Moore: In ‘Twas the Night Before, We Are Guiding Isabella Into This Magical World

Kinjaz Dance Crew _ Photo Credit: Kyle Flubacker

Cirque du Soleil’s first Christmas show “‘Twas the Night Before…” is headed to New York’s Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on December 9th! Before that highly anticipated event, it is currently being presented at The Chicago Theatre (175 N. State Street) for 17 grand performances. (The entire show is brought to audiences by Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp and Cirque.)

Dancer Samuel Moore is one of the many artistic masters gracing the stage this season. Following Cirque’s 2019 version of “‘Twas the Night Before…”, this is the second time Samuel Moore is performing in this magical holiday circus.

Let’s meet him now!

BTSCelebs: Who is Samuel Moore professionally?

Samuel Moore: I am a hard-working and optimistic individual who knows how to be fun but also very productive in the workplace. I’m always looking on the bright side, and I’m always trying to be a solution to someone’s problem. I believe that I am a person who is very easy to work with.

What was your role in creating “’Twas the Night Before”?

In ‘Twas the Night Before, I am one of the 6 Dancers and our character in the show is called Les Tuques! What our role entails is we are guiding the main character, Isabella, into this magical world of ours and trying to get back into the spirit of Christmas!

How will the 2021 “’Twas the Night Before” production differ from the previously sold out one?

I think that the 2021 production of ‘Twas the Night Before will be different from the 2019 production by providing the audience with new and exciting acts and also a more detailed plot within the story.

Now that you are returning to the Windy City, how do you enjoy Chicago to the fullest?

How I enjoy Chicago to the fullest is just embracing the culture the city has to offer, all the beautiful sights to see, and enjoying some really good food!

What projects or productions should fans anticipate from you in 2022?

My 2022 will be full of surprises! For me and for my fans. In all honesty, I can’t wait for what 2022 has to offer me!

Learn more about “‘Twas the Night Before” and even more shows by visiting Cirque du Soleil’s official website, cirquedusoleil.com.

A Special Thanks to Samuel Moore, Cirque du Soleil and The Silverman Group for the exclusive interview and image.

[Interview] Dancer Aiden Moss: The Nutcracker Prince Is Leadership

On December 4th, A&A Ballet presents another glamorous performance of “The Art Deco Nutcracker“. Alexei Kremnev‘s eighth full-length ballet plans to make Tchaikovsky’s classic music shine in front of a modern audience. This version of “The Nutcracker”, which is set in America during the 1920s, stars dancer Aiden Moss as The Nutcracker Prince.

Recently, BTSCelebs was offered the wonderful opportunity to interview this young artist, who is an aspiring studio owner himself. In our exclusive interview, Aiden introduces himself, mentions his dance beginnings, discusses his role in the holiday special and more.

Meet dancer Aiden Moss now.

BTSCelebs: Who is Aiden Moss professionally?

[Aiden Moss] is an aspiring dancer, who is currently training under the A&A faculty here in Chicago. He will someday use all the knowledge he’s accumulating to be a studio owner one day. Also, he is a store director for Chick-fil-A who primarily runs the back of the house. He loves the parts of the job where he can hustle and show others how to make their job easier.

What piqued your interest in dance?

I began my dancing at the age of 5 when I took my older sisters ballet class one day just for fun. And fell in love with it. I was about 14 when the classical ballet took over my life and I started looking at it as something that I never wanted to stop doing. I love the strict standards that the Vaganova method of ballet brings to the studio and your life.

Why did you choose to join “The Art Deco Nutcracker”?

I always jump to the opportunity to dance in The Nutcracker every year and the “Art Deco” is no exception. The level of technical excellence and the emotion in the characters that us A&A dancers have the pleasure to perform for the community is something that I will always be thankful to be apart of.

Tell us about one thing you have in common with your character Nutcracker Prince and one thing that differs.

Something that I found similar to The Nutcracker Prince is leadership. During the first act, The Nutcracker (still in doll form) has to lead an army of soldiers into battle. I think it relates well to my director position at Chick-fil-A, where I have to lead my “army” into the battle of community crevice. We may not have to battle rats and mice, but the battle of a city full of hungry guests.

I think something that differs between to character and myself is when the character is trapped inside his doll form until Clara helps him defeat the mouse king. Then he is free and can be himself. I don’t think I’ve ever been as trapped in myself in such a way. I’ve always known myself as a person and what I believe in has never changed. That’s helped me get to where I am today. Through my young professional journey.

What timeless message do you hope audiences take away from “The Art Deco Nutcracker” this holiday season?

For one, I hope the audience finds joy from the experience of seeing an amazing performance with their families. We are still coming out of a season of not performing, so I hope to show the audience that it’s ok to be imaginative with family and friends. That you can still enjoy spending time with family and friends and still making memories this season.

What is one priceless piece of advice you cherish from your instructors at A&A Ballet?

I really value everything I learn at the A&A ballet from everyone there. Alexei Kremnev has really taught me to let loose when dancing roles, such as the Nutcracker Prince and to really embody the role to fullest. Take time to learn the story, scene, and part.

What productions and special surprises should fans expect from you in 2022?

Expect to see dancers excel in excellence in every role we portray, definitely in the next Art Deco Nutcracker. Dancers are always improving so that next season we can show the audience the best part of ourselves.

Learn more about “The Art Deco Nutcracker” by visiting A&A Ballet’s website – aacenterfordance.org.

A Special Thanks to Aiden Moss and A&A Ballet for the images and exclusive interview.

[Interview] 5 Questions With Jonathan Bingham

Tomorrow, Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra premieres its 32nd Season with “Simply Serenades”. Composer in Residence Jonathan Bingham is poised to make the world premiere of his orchestral serenade “Tautology”, and BTSCelebs was given the golden opportunity to interview him.

Currently, the Howard University and New York University grad is a Donna Milanovich Composer in Residence at CPO. His resume includes completed residencies with Boulder Symphony, collaborations alongside artists from multiple genres and international premieres of his work.

Learn more about this gifted man of music now.

Who is Jonathan Bingham professionally?

I’m still trying to figure this out! I can say, though, that I’ve dedicated much of my time over the past decade trying to develop skills for different areas in music. Composition for the concert hall has a different approach than writing for media, popular culture, etc. It’s been my responsibility, as well as the responsibility of my fellow composers, to branch out and service different mediums.

What piqued your interest in performing arts?

Composing music was the first activity that fully transfixed me. It’s easy enough to be fun yet challenging enough to prevent boredom. To add, any individual getting to know the performing arts becomes connected to a rich, worldly history and lineage. I remain thankful for it.

Why did you choose to join “Simply Serenades”?

The best art pays homage to its history simultaneously as conveying novelty. Getting to write for a traditional ensemble while experimenting with different musical structures (that weren’t thought of during the days of the serenade) opens up so many opportunities for salience.

What bold message do you want the audience to take away from your orchestral serenade “Tautology” in “Simply Serenades”?

Every piece of art should be made with the intent of having salience. This is done by displaying convention but also novelty. Too much novelty without convention makes the piece unrelatable while too much convention makes the piece irrelevant. I hope the audience finds Tautology somewhere in between these points.

What productions and special surprises should fans expect from you in 2022?

I’ve taken on a fellowship in the Bay Area. This has lead to a new commission I look forward to starting towards the end of the year. Additionally, I have a recording project—Cool Story—which researches music of lesser known composers and produces their first recordings. Currently, we have a set of works from composers—many of them unpublished—that have been associated with Howard University throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. This project is made possible from generous donations through coolstoryrecords.com.

“Simply Serenades” will be held at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts (9501 Skokie Blvd, Skokie, IL).

Special Thanks to Jonathan Bingham, Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra and The Silverman Group for the exclusive interview and images.
