I'm an obsessive book lover, a communication scholar studying media, politics and identity, and an ardent TV, film, and art enthusiast. As a reader, my favorite genres are romance, suspense, literary fiction and non-fiction related to media and politics. I like novels that combine great storytelling, humor and social commentary.

All time favorite authors include: Jane Austen, Zadie Smith, and Charles Dickens. New faves: Alyssa Cole, Adriana Herrera, Talia Hibbert, Sally Rooney and Tana French. My literary first loves were Jane Eyre, David Copperfield, and Nancy Drew.

My research explores the relationship between media, politics, public opinion and public policy. My aim is to understand the role that media and culture play in attitudes and be

Review: The Prophets

The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One of my favorite parts of a heartbreaking but thoroughly beautiful book. “They thought we was something dirty, but it won’t nothing like that at all. It was easy, really. He the only one who understand me without me saying a word. Can tell what I thinking just by where I looking—or not looking. So when he

I'm not absolutely definitely positively giving up on this. But despite liking Elle & Darcy bunches, I have found myself putting it down a lot and not feeling enthused about picking it back up.

Truly disliked this book in every way. I was in high school in the 80s. It wasn’t the dark ages unless you wanted it to be. I’ve seen a lot of people write about what an idiot the female mc is. They’re right. But the hero is also terrible, and I have ...more

“There’s much more to black history than pain and hard times, and romance authors, more than anyone else, know it. A writer friend told me that’s what he thinks some people outside of the culture don’t get about blackness: the sheer joy of it, especially given so many are only fixated on the struggle. Black romance thrives on complexity and nuance, on black solidarity and achievement, on the triumph of everyday life lived well, in spite of the odds.

“Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it.”
Donna Tartt, The Secret History

“I was not a romantic, but when Easton Archer looked at me like that I felt like I could invent a whole new life. Just so I could get to have him without conflicts or guilt, without the world getting in the way of this joy.”
Adriana Herrera, American Love Story

“No one can be independent of other people completely, so why not give up the attempt, she thought, go running in the other direction, depend on people for everything, allow them to depend on you, why not. She knows he loves her, she doesn’t wonder about that anymore.”
Sally Rooney, Normal People

“When they drew apart Connell looked her in the eyes and said: I love you. She was laughing then, and her face was red. She was in his power, he had chosen to redeem her, she was redeemed.”
Sally Rooney, Normal People

“Le coeur a ses raisons que la raison ne connait point. French. Pascal. The heart has its reasons, whereof reason knows nothing.”
