I take a break. I might go for a walk or if I'm in a coffee shop, sit and eavesdrop on a conversation or people watch.

Another option is to open a new doc and just brainstorm ideas for what the scene is about or think about the main character, imaging dialogue or emotions for whatever is going on at the time. Also, I might go back to the outline. Or just go read a book or watch a movie with a character similar to mine.

If nothing's working, I probably should call it for the day because it's always better the next day, but I don't. I torture myself by continuing on :) Ultimately, over time, it does always work out if I just trust the process!(less)

Usually, my main character grows, has some laughs, and finds some hope, so it's a good place to be in. And if the character is falling in love, discovering new paths, feeling empowered and hopeful through connections she makes with other characters, then it's like I'm in her shoes having her experience. It's as if I'm reading the book, but getting to live with it longer because I'm in there working away for so much time.

I also quite love connecting with readers through my characters because the readers connect with my characters. When I read and love a character or idea, I feel connected to the writer and my world is improved because I know there is someone else out there having the same experience, idea or emotion. I love being on the other end of that, too.(less)

“Then, Leo will be my friend. He will like my mind. Our brains can kiss. Even if our bodies can’t. Even if he has a girlfriend. It is an intellectual crush. Our brains can have sex. Would I have sex with him? Yes. Brain sex!!!”
Nicole Schubert, Saoirse Berger's Bookish Lens In La La Land

“People only tease those they love.”
Nicole Schubert, Saoirse Berger's Bookish Lens In La La Land

“But then, he said, "Cute nose." Cute. I have a cute nose. And a cute boyfriend. With cute elk kisses. Also, elk do not sleep standing up. Also, female elk don't have antlers. Also, male elk (bulls) have a harem of cows. Which is maybe why elk popped into my head randomly. Me and Sadie were the cows in Heck's harem. That's weird. But it does explain why I'd randomly think of elks. Elk. Also, though, elk remind me of when we went to Yellowstone—me, Mom, Dad, Mr. Griffin—and saw elk. It was nice. Happy family. And fun. Therefore, elk make me feel happy. And that's probably the real reason for elk randomly popping into my head. Or maybe my mind is a bull with a harem of way too many thought cows! Weirdo.”

“I hate writing, I love having written.”
Dorothy Parker

“The only virtue on which I pride myself is my self-doubt; when a writer loses her self-doubt, the time has come to lay aside her pen.”
Colette

“But no, I came by these feelings honestly. And I don’t accept bitter. Wounded, yes. Traumatized, sure. Grieving, okay. Anything other than bitter. I put too much work in to be callously tossed aside as bitter. Bitter is for someone who hasn’t earned it.”
Samantha Irby, Meaty

“Margo always loved mysteries. And in everything that came afterward, I could never stop thinking that maybe she loved mysteries so much that she became one.”
