I have never had a job that fit me as well. I tried every kind of job you could think of before making up my mind that trying to be who I wanted couldn't be any worse than the daily effort that it took to be what other people expected me to be. Being a writer allows me to take the strange notions and daydreams that often alienated me from my employers and make a living by making others happy. My only regret is that I didn't start living my dream until I lived so many nightmares.(less)

When it comes to military authors, I am mostly influenced by Tim O'Brian, Karl Malantes, Anton Myrer, and Kent Anderson. It was very important to me when I was growing up to read as much as I could about Vietnam because it seemed that every adult male I knew had served there. With that said, I do plan to read Lords of Discipline when I get the chance.(less)

The joys of an MFA program

I haven't been blogging as much as I could have been the last few months as a result of my participation in University of Washington's Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program. I thought I would take this opportunity, at the end of my first quarter, to talk a little about why I think I made the best decision of my life by applying and attending an MFA program.

Train to the Edge of the Moon by Asper Blurry
“A man is nothing without dreams. A man is called idiot while he dreams. Whatever he does, he'll be judged and thrown away from the circle of clowns. And yet he needs acceptance and security from sick society, which is discriminatory far too often. But a man is blinded by other people opinions. He wants to fly and they say, “You moron, you can't do that, it's forbidden, it's stupid.” And a man gives up on his dreams.”
