Broken Records ARC Review

hazelandglasz:

When I first heard that @lilahsuzanne was back with a new novel, I was thrilled.

If you haven’t read her novela, Pivot and Slip, or her first novel, Spice, well, my friends, I can only encourage to go and read them because they are fine examples of Lilah’s talent.

But I digress.

I was thrilled, as I was saying, because the summary presented it as a love story with a musical background.

I mean, “Broken Records”.

And that visual for the cover–all my kudos to the artistic team at IP!!

The book itself is lovely–I have actually stuck post-its for every time I laughed out loud while reading, and I’m pretty sure some are missing.

The characters are compelling–the main cast and the “supporting” cast, I mean, we never even meet her and I love Grady’s Memaw!

But what struck me the most about this book is the excellent job Suzanne has done with the pacing, the rhythm of it.

There is truly a melody written within those words, one that spoke to me even though I did not grow up amidst Country music or Blues.

(Jazz, yes, but that’s a different story altogether)

Also, the fact that it is a romantic love story between two men, but also a platonic love story between a man and a woman, and a love story (I won’t even try to define it) between a man and his music

And also, a man who has a complicated relationship with food (I *adored* that aspect of Nico-you’ll see)

My only complain?

That I now have to wait for Part 2 of the series.

I already knew, when I opened that book, that Lilah Suzanne was a talented writer, capable of weaving emotions like a colorful tapestry.

I now have an inkling that she can also write relationship like a timeless melody.

“Morning. I came to collect my wife.” Flora is unruffled by Nico’s sorry pants-less state, stepping past him and into the living room.

She’s close to Nico’s height, buxom and with round, full features, has pulled her thick black hair into a low braid, and wears a gauzy peasant skirt and billowy tie-dye blouse.

“Great.” Nico backs away. “I will just…get some pants then.”

Henry Burnett was like no one Renaldo had ever met. He made Renaldo want to be on his best behavior, want to be respected and liked. With a pang, he realized that when this trail ride came to an end, he might not ever see the man again.

In 1870s Texas, Renaldo Valle Santos, the youngest son of a large and traditional family, has been sent to train with Henry “Hank” Burnett, a freed slave and talented mesteñero—or horse-catcher—so he may continue the family horse trade. Bitter Springs is a sweeping epic that takes themes from traditional Mexican literature and old westerns to tell the story of a man coming into his own and realizing his destiny lies in the wild open spaces with the man who loves him, far from expectations of society.

Laura Stone is a born and bred Texan, but don’t hold that against her. She’s a former comedian, actress and Master Gardener, and currently keeps busy as a media blogger, ghostwriter and novelist when not busy raising her three children. They’re not fully raised, but then, neither is she.

She lives in Texas as proof that it’s not completely populated by hard-line right wingers—and because that’s where the good tamales are. Her first novel, The Bones of You, was published by Interlude Press in 2014 and was named a finalist for two Foreword Reviews IndieFab Book of the Year Awards.

Coming in May: In the Present Tense by Carrie Pack

Seventeen-year-old Miles Lawson goes to sleep in
on the eve of surgery to repair a badly healed broken arm, alone in his bed in
his parent’s house and dreaming of a future with Adam, his high school
boyfriend; he wakes to find himself sharing a bed with his wife Ana, a high
school acquaintance who tells him he’s now twenty-five and has been time
traveling.

About the author

Carrie is a part-time college professor who recently left her job in marketing to actively pursue her writing career. Her early career focused on advertising, journalism, and public relations while she also did freelance writing for businesses in the nonprofit sector. Writing has always been a part of her life, but she never believed she could write fiction until she found a community of like-minded authors of fanfiction on Tumblr. She holds a bachelor’s in communication from Flagler College and a master’s in journalism education from the University of Missouri. Carrie lives in Florida, which she fondly calls America’s Wang, with her husband and three cats. Follow Carrie Pack and learn more about her work at CarriePack.com.
