IP, LGBTQ Lit, and North Carolina

Months ago, Interlude Press made a commitment to participate
in the Asheville (NC) Zine Fest, a first time, LGBTQ-friendly fan con featuring
indie and small press artists and writers. With two popular IP/Duet authors
based in the area, it made sense to get involved. As part of ongoing book
promotions, we also have signings scheduled at Malaprops in Asheville and other
prominent bookstores.

Fast-forward to spring, and the state of North Carolina
passed House Bill 2, a heinously discriminatory piece of legislation that
targets the LGBTQ community. Entertainers and corporations have rightly
boycotted or pulled out of events in the state to apply financial pressure on state
legislators. Best-selling authors have canceled North Carolina signings, causing business to drop at these stores, including many that oppose HB2.

Does IP join the boycott, contributing little to the financial pressure but making a statement? Or should an LGBTQ company such as IP hold fast to its commitments to show support for its community and make LGBTQ publications accessible in conservative Southern states?

We did a lot of soul-searching about this, and consulted not only our authors and local bookstores, but also other members of the LGBTQ community, and their voices were unanimous: Who is going to be there for North Carolina’s LGBTQ if not its LGBTQ businesses? We were encouraged to move forward, to show North Carolina that the LGBTQ community is here to stay—and to somehow make a statement in the process.

And that’s what we intend to do.

The weekend of the Asheville Zine Fest, we aim to
raise money for Equality North Carolina, a group spearheading the effort to overturn
HB2. We’ll donate $1 for every book and eBook we sell both in-person at the
Fest as well as at the IP Web Store between April 29 and May 1. We’ve also
created a page at our web store where, starting today, you can contribute without purchasing a
book
.We’ve also included a  link that takes you directly to the Equality NC donation site, if you prefer.

We’ll also be selling buttons with proceeds going to Equality NC and
wearing new “Y’all Means All” t-shirts for the Fest.

So, the long and short of it
is, we’re going. We’re going to wave our rainbow flags and show at least this corner of the state that we stand in support of our
local authors, supportive booksellers, and especially North Carolina’s LGBTQ community.

North Carolina is a tough place to call home right now, but for so many in the LGBTQ community it’s not as easy as pulling up stakes and heading for the hills. I am so heartened by the many, many voices here in NC speaking out about this horrific legislation, and I am so proud to be with a publisher who is joining in that fight.

Gripping Arthur’s leash tight in one hand and Nathan’s hand tight in the other, she swept her gaze over the faces in front of her, looking desperately for the familiar fall of dark hair over a face with a wide and agile mouth, or for a pair of haunting orange eyes.

Summary

In the rare moments when Deanna Scott isn’t working as the moderator for Wolf’s Run, an online werewolf role-playing game, she wanders the local forest trails with her golden retriever, Arthur, and daydreams about Jaime, the attractive, enigmatic woman who lives upstairs.

As Wolf Run’s “den mother,” Deanna is accustomed to petty online drama. But when threats from an antagonistic player escalate, Deanna wonders if her awesome online job could be riskier than she’d ever imagined—and if her new girlfriend knows more about this community than she had realized.

dalecameronlowry:

A couple months ago I tweeted @alysia-constantine, asking if she’d so an interview on my blog about her first novel, an unconventional romance novel called Sweet. You see, I had read an earlier version of it as she’d posted it online and fallen in love with the humor and joie de vivre in her narrative voice. The publisher’s summary captures it well:

Jules Burns is a lonely baker mourning the loss of his husband Andy. Teddy Flores is a numbed-to-the-world accountant who accidentally stumbles into his bakery and, with the help of a mouthy baker’s assistant, some good pastry, and Jules himself, rediscovers his deep connections to pleasure, to the world, and to his own heart.

Sweet is also the story of how we tell stories—of what we expect and need from a love story. The narrator is on to you, Reader, and wants to give you a love story that doesn’t always fit the bill. There are ghosts to exorcise, and jobs and money to worry about. Sweet is a love story, yes, but a story that reminds us that love is never quite what we expect, nor quite as blissfully easy as we hope.

Alas, life got in the way. I left the country for a few weeks. I came back with a to-do list longer than to-do lists ought to be. Then I got the stomach flu. Oh joy.

Or perhaps, given my earlier use of French, I ought to say joie.

But I am back, and ready to internet.

Alysia was a blast to speak with. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did!

[Interview below cut.]

Thank for this great interview!
