Burning Tracks Giveaway

Burning Tracks is almost ready for its August 11th debut, but right now you can enter to win a copy from Goodreads! Just click here to enter. It is WAY easier than recording an album.

I’m assuming.

I was chatting with someone privately about this and figured I’d share for anyone interested: This is what I imagine Grady’s voice/sound to be, more or less. The Broken Records soundtrack is here by the way for this and other alt-country type bands.

But Lilah, you say, I don’t like country music. Just. Trust me.

“4 ½ STARS: This book had so many things going for it; I almost don’t know where to start. First, there was the cast, with Craig leading the way. He’s simply adorable, from his need to care for people to his spiritual wisdom, throwing himself with abandon into anything he enjoys: baking, fucking, looking after people… loving. Loving Alex, to be precise, who started out the prickliest of prickly cactuses but opened up like a flower under Craig’s tender hands, one tiny petal at a time. They were so perfect for each other, a born problem fixer and a guy carrying an almighty pack of these around, a dark-skinned Englishman of Scottish and West Indian heritage and the blond scion of a Russian-American clan. And if these two weren’t diverse enough, there’s a bunch of side characters who are just as colorful. All kinds of races, genders, identities, and orientations coexist cheerfully on the pages of this book”

Burning Tracks Character Inspiration: Cheese

Usually my characters have bits and pieces of other people that I’ve stolen and smashed together, Frankenstein-like, but for Burning Tracks I did something different, using someone in my life and splatting* them right onto the page:

image

This is Buttercup, who served as direct inspiration for Gwen and Flora’s giant lazy orange tabby named Cheese. And as I’m incapable of writing an animal in my stories without them becoming essential to the plot (see: Walt, in Spiceand an upcoming goat I’ll tell you more about soon) Cheese and her siblings take on a lot of symbolism: Gwen’s fierce heart, Flora’s unshakeable faith, and Clementine’s continued sacrifices. In the story, Cheese and her brother Mac are rescued from a dumpster as kittens, and in real life I rescued Buttercup and her two sisters from a busy roadside where they were dumped, terrified and just barely old enough to be weaned. As you can see, she’s doing pretty well these days.

Buttercup likes: sleeping for 8+ hours a day in the same spot, pipe cleaners, raw broccoli, strawberry stems, asking for food three minutes after she’s been fed, hiding.

Buttercup dislikes: people, noises, doors opening, sudden movements, that food she loved yesterday, the vacuum, the broom, ghosts??? (Maybe shadows. I’m not sure what she’s seeing tbh)

Look at that belly! A+ belly floof.

*No cats were actually splatted during the making of this book.

Built by Dan Maddox in 1957, RCA Studio B first became known as one of the cradles of the “Nashville Sound” in the 1960s. A sophisticated style characterized by background vocals and strings, the Nashville Sound both revived the popularity of country music and helped establish Nashville as an international recording center.

Hitmakers in Studio B have included Eddy Arnold, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare, Dolly Parton, Jim Reeves, Willie Nelson, and Floyd Cramer, among others. For many years, Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Chet Atkins managed RCA’s Nashville operation and produced hundreds of hits in Studio B.
