Bacon is the devil . . . and much more

Nigel Slater was on the BBC4’s Women’s Hour this week, and my golly did he strike a chord with me. I’m not a full on foodie by any means, but yet I despair at times at what should and shouldn’t be eaten.

I have asked myself if it is time we went back to eating the basics? I’d like to, and I have to admit time is a factor, but then I have to remind myself to  “Get off the couch, you lazy moo.”

Below is some of what he had to say:

‘I am concerned about the current victimisation of food. The apparent need to divide the contents of our plates into heroes and villains. The current villains are sugar and gluten, though it used to be fat, and before that it was salt (and before that it was carbs and … oh, I’ve lose track). It is worth remembering that today’s devil will probably be tomorrow’s angel and vice versa.

The author of ten cookbooks said people should remember how to enjoy making and eating simple food with their families, adding: ‘The very notion of someone being a “foodie” makes me shudder

‘We risk having the life sucked out of our eating by allowing ourselves to be shamed over our food choices. If this escalates, historians many look back on this generation as one in which society’s decision about what to eat was driven by guilt and shame rather than by good taste or pleasure. Well, not on my watch.’

‘This week I think bacon is the devil, last week it was sugar, next week it will be, who knows?

Ticking off something on my to-do-list

I don’t really have a bucket list, but something I have long wanted to do is parasailing. So when we arrived in Mauritius I sidled up to hubby and said I wouldn’t mind giving it a go. He said go for it, and that is exactly what I did.

On the day, Hubby had very strict instructions to aim the camera and just keep clicking! And because with many digital’s these days you can’t see anything in the screen, and hubby was thinking I might dump him in the sea if he didn’t get some happy snappies, he readied the camera, by his ear, waiting to hear the click that would confirm photo’s were being taken. I think he did OK :)

I’ve created my first gallery here and hoping it works!

Great South African Bake Off – growing on me – #bosomjiggle

You know, the Great South African Bake Off has really grown on me

bake off michaela

When it first aired I cast judgement on no matter how often the bakers are told to produce identical cakes/rolls, not one is able to do so. Now I find this rather endearing, and I feel the urge to cheer the bakers on as they roll, ice and flop their way through each episode.

I have wondered if the bakes are not traditional enough for SA Bakers, which might be causing some of the problem, but now I can’t really make my mind up on this. Any thoughts?

There is no favourite in our house, rather an affection for them all.

And how was this comment about a bosom jiggle made my Tjarrt – priceless

On your marks, get set, BAKE

Spot the mistake

While I was away on my holiday I had a birthday. Yay! I’ve gone back a year instead of forward. New policy :)

Anyhoooooo, the resort we stayed at made me a cake. Hubby and I were told to not leave our table, but to please wait. We did, and look what they presented.

Hmmm, can you spot the mistake?

Heading off

Yay! Heading off on holiday today. Bags are almost packed, most important underwear is in! You can do without a lot, but oh no mister/missy not your clean undies.

See you in a week :)

Which female author would you vote for?

On my other blog I try to post things which are female related, only because the blog is about a woman and it seems logical to follow the theme (is that nuts?). Anywhooooo, I thought this post was worth sharing as I know there are a lot of readers out there. Please go see, and let me know who you would vote for. And if you are in the UK, maybe you can vote at the BBC site

Do you remember only having to order Coffee?

Standing at the counter, gazing up at the endless choices available to me at a coffee shop, I find myself wishing for a time gone by when all I had to do was order “coffee, with milk and sugar please.”

I think Tom Hanks sums my conundrum up quite nicely.

“The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don’t know what the hell they’re doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self.

Stick an onion in your ear and put your bottom in the air

Have you ever heard of these remedies for Tinnitus?

I’ve been busy looking for a remedy for the constant ringing in my ears and decided to do as you do and google them. Was mighty surprised to come up with these two.

Raise your bottom in the air

Being a newbie to Yoga, I looked first for a pose that would help, and came across this one. Well I’m not sure how this will assist the old ears, but if I could get my knees in that position I would certainly give it a whirl. The fact I may end up with a slipped disc or need traction for week is neither here nor they, at least the ringing could have gone.

2. Stick an onion in your ear.

ear

Well this one is certainly easier, but as to the smell and reaction from those around me, I think the bottom in the air is looking pretty good to me.

So the idea with the onion is to either shove a  piece in your ear, or chop an onion up, cover with boiling water, drain, and then dispense said onion-water into the ear.

on the off chance I struggle with these two, anybody have a suggestion that doesn’t involve a pongy food or body contortion?

Jude’s Bench Series #41 and double denim

I have been inspired by Sylvia of Another Day in Paradise blogs, and her many benches prompted by Jude’s Bench Series #41. So much so I went in search of any I might have recorded. I found a few where no person or animal were seated, and then I stumbled on this one.

Here is my hubby, sat on a humble bench in 2007 at Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top home in Cumbria.

We were heading up to Scotland, or it could have been heading back home, and took a detour to visit BP’s home. It was so beautiful there, and oh so many people moving from room to room, and then around the gardens.

Hubby looks much the same, albeit slightly more hair. And apologies for the double denim, it was cold, that’s all I can say :)
