Dear Madonna

Dear Madonna,

Let’s be blunt here,  I know you’re in the middle of a custody battle, which must be a nightmare, but why oh why have you not shown your son how important he is to you by shutting down your tour to be in London with him?

Surely falling apart on the stage and maintaining a dialouge on Twitter can’t be the way to go, nor be doing you a whole lot of good?  And why you need to stand on a stage to call out to your son is beyond me. Pick up the phone, send him an email, but keep it between the two of you.

Parents sacrifice a lot for their children, children shouldn’t sacrifice for them. And if that means your bank balance is compromised, I think you’ll cope. Baked beans on toast will not be the main meal of the day for you.

Pull yourself towards yourself and do the right thing.

Ruth

My husband no longer wears his underpants inside out

underpants Photo link

Oh yes, we have progress, hubster no longer wears his underpants inside out. Actually, the only reason I’m telling you this is because he came to me the other day, while I was staring at my laptop and said.

“Are you blogging about me again, and how I no longer wear my underpants inside out?”

Well no, I wasn’t. Although to be fair I did happen to mention this to a number of people when he was wearing them inside out a few months back.

Why oh why would he be doing this, you may be wondering, although why you would I have no idea. But should you be, it seems he was having a problem with the elastic around the leg. Rough it was.  And somehow wearing them inside out made this better? Shakes her head in bewilderment.

As an aside, underpants is a right funny word don’t you think?

The photo above was taken from here. Sadly, err, sorry, I meant to say, the body on show is not the hubsters. However, the site the photo came from is foreign, and I need to add a disclaimer of not being held responsible for the content, should it be rather cheeky, or just darn right rude.

Apart from the hubsters undies, he has been on topic a few times. At first it was on the hush-hush, and has evolved to the point where he rather likes it.

He has been amusing over the years mind . . . and occasionally not. His reference to a Whale and me was not so funny.

A Gift he gave me was not so funny.

These were funny though. A walk in the forest . A garage door with flapping gown and bare legs had me more than smiling, and then we had another walk in the forest where he fell and I thought it was a proposal

Got to love him, underpants inside out or not

Moving on

In just under 6 weeks time, hubster and I will be moving back to the UK. It’s been a long time coming, and after me having lived in South Africa for 35 years, and hubster well over 40, we know we are ready to go.

As I sit at my Cape Town desk this morning, I’ve caught the sun rise, and in doing so have watched the reveal of the mountain, and the varied signs of life as cars and people head to work and school. And all the while I’m reminded of how lucky I am to have this spot next to the window, and how magical it is to watch the day dawn. And just as valuable, how these sightings will soon become memories.

That’s the thing about moving, the farewells, the realisations and the retaining of memories. And with this I find myself pausing often . . . taking a moment to remind myself how this is the last time: I will be seeing this, walking this way, driving my car, greeting my colleagues, going to yoga class, socialising with these people, seeing the bluest of blue skies, and touching the soil of our Cape garden.

Moving on then. A new adventure is ahead, and yet the goodbyes will be oh so very hard.

Something for University students to think about

I heard this yesterday, and while it is aimed at US students, it’s hard not to believe it applies to ALL students who think they are OWED an education.

Do yourself a favour and listen to @liz_wheeler, she’s articulate and kept me riveted.

Would be interested to hear what you think, agree or not?

After You by Jojo Moyes

after you

This was my second Jojo Moyes book – the first one being Me Before You. After You being the sequel

I really liked this book. It was good to find out what happened to Lou and her family, as well as the Traynors. There was some surprise in how Jojo Moyes chose to move Lou along, and at times I wasn’t entirely convinced of how Lou really felt about losing Will. But then I asked myself do I want to read about a young woman moping around, and concluded NO I DO NOT!

My favourite moments though were with Lou’s parents, and how they faced their own set of problems, and I particularly roared at the waxed legs scenario at the end. And dare I say, Jojo Moyes could do herself a favour by writing a book about them.

Overall a Goodread

The Break-up

Wow, this is a great short story to sit and read as you enjoy your fresh cup of coffee. Having only recently ‘ followed’ Karina, I have to say how very pleased I am to be doing so.

Karina Magdalena

It was an awkward situation. I was standing there, in front of my best friend’s door, with a cardboard box and an old suitcase in my arms, feeling foolish. I could hear her drying her hair inside. Taking a deep breath, I pressed the bell.

“Coming!” Marlene shouted, switching off the hairdryer.

When she opened the door, the dark hallway of the flat building was flooded with sunshine. It was the beginning of a hot summer day, the humidity in the air promising rain later in the afternoon. Marlene’s damp red curls looked on fire in the bright morning light.

She hovered in the doorframe, staring at the box and the suitcase, twisting one of her curls between a forefinger and a thumb.

“Hi,” I volunteered.

“Hi, come in.” She disentangled her fingers from her hair and swept her hand aside in a gesture of welcome. The flimsy bathrobe she…

Barbie got real

Can you believe it, Barbie has had a make-over!  She comes in all different sizes now, curvy, petite, tall and so on and so on.

What do you think?

I can’t help wondering how many little girls will notice the difference. Or will it be more the mummy’s nodding and sighing, and agreeing or not?

Goodreads readers are not experts

Well there you have it. Ellah Allfrey – literary editor, critic and Booker Prize Judge – has said Goodreads readers are not experts.

She is a fan of Goodreads, but said “. . . the only problem with that kind of a website is that the readers are not experts and you have to go elsewhere to find experts . . .”

If you’d like to hear the entire clip, yon can do so by clicking on the BBC Open Book link HERE

Now I’m sorry, but I do not agree with her regarding Goodreads readers not being experts. And for that matter what makes a reader an expert? Does one have to be an academic, well read, or an elitist of sorts?

Every person who takes the time to read a book in my eyes is a winner, and it matters not what the genre be, or the intellectual level, or anything else for that matter. What counts is a reader takes great joy in reading, and then takes the time to share both objective and subjective reviews, which influence or not, or leave an impression on those who choose to read their reviews.

I say well done to you Goodreads readers.

I salute you!

Updated myself – 2016

I’ve been blogging for so long now I think I might have just been out of nappies when I first hit the keyboard and put myself out there. During this time I’ve had 2 gravatars, a little bunch of flowers – from my garden

dscf2329.jpg

And a dear little bird – so wish he had been mine – not in a cage, but as a garden resident

I feel so silly in this hat

And now it’s time to update once more. Here I am, my new gravatar. Little ol’ me, in the flesh, no hiding allowed.

Hoping to spend more time blogging and visiting this year, because while the nappies have long gone, the need to write, read and eat lots of chocolate remains
