Simple (well, simple to say, anyway). 4 things:

1) Read a lot.
2) if you love to write, write as much as you can. Write anything and everything, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, journaling, etc.
3) find a group with whom you can share your work confidently, and be open to feedback. It's daunting at first, but it's the best way to improve your writing and editing skills.
4) This is ABSOLUTELY THE MOST IMPORTANT: be persistent, in your writing, your critiquing, editing, revising, submitting your work, marketing and promotion. You will receive countless more rejections than praise, so get used to it and keep moving forward.(less)

Quite honestly, for the first few years (yes, years), it was truly awful, essentially unreadable. But that's another story...
I wanted to write something about a father-son relationship, something to explore the challenges of raising children, dealing with mistakes, and the importance of not giving up on family—or what happens when a person does give up on family. I also was interested in exploring the idea of absentee parenting, and what can happen to children when their parents don't feel capable of raising them. I'm a big advocate of those who can't speak for themselves, and I've always felt that kids whose parents don't put in the effort suffer, and it's never their fault to begin with.

"Save One Life, and You Save the Whole World"

Schindler's Listis back for a short run at a couple of cinemas in Fort Collins. It's 25 years old, but the message of the dangers of hatred and bigotry...well, let's just say our country could use a reboot.

Last night, I took my 15-year-old to see one of the most important films ever made:Steven Spielberg's opus about the efforts of one very wealthy, magnanimous man to save over a thousand Jews... Read more of this blog post »

I'm not much of a Sherlock Holmes fan in general, so it was a bit hard to get into for me. Writing style was readable. basically, three separate stories going on simultaneously, which in and of itself isn't necessarily distracting, but none of the ...more
