Liverpool lass Tess is now settled in the far north of England where she roams the fells with a brolly, dreaming up new stories and startling the occasional sheep.

Tess writes a distinctive brand of British comédie noir and her short stories have darkened the pages of various anthologies and magazines, including Shotgun Honey, Pulp Metal Magazine, 'Drag Noir' (Fox Spirit), 'Rogue' (Near to the Knuckle), and 'Locked and Loaded' (One Eye Press). Her debut novella, a psychological noir called 'Raise the Blade', is available from Caffeine Nights Publishing, and her first novel, 'Gravy Train', is due imminently from All Due Respect.

You can follow her ramblings (both literary and literal) at her blog: http://tessmakovesky.wordpress.com/ .

Dead Air review

[image error]People are always telling me how dark Iain Banks’ writing is, so when I read my only previous example of his work, ‘The Crow Road’, I was surprised because it didn’t seem very dark at all. So when I found a copy of ‘Dead Air’ on a book sale stall at last year’s Crime and Publishment event, I was in two minds whether to pick it up or not. I did, but it languished on my ‘to be read’...

Tess Makovesky and 4 other people liked Stephanie Wasek's review of Haverscroft:
Haverscroft by S.A. Harris
"Disturbingly atmospheric, fully realised characters, cleverly told. And, unlike untold numbers of other, inferior books, never forgets about the dog. 10/10 would buy creepy countryside house again."
From Blue to Black by Joel Lane

I really enjoyed the book. It's hopelessly sad in places and I felt it needed an extra edit, but overall it's taut, dramatic and kept me reading right to the last page. I loved the descriptions of Fair Isle, which reminded me of the Orkney Isle of Ho ...more

A gripping thriller about a female detective, Kerry Darke, investigating a senseless drive-by killing of a mother and young child, which sparks echoes of an earlier case involving a Cumbrian serial killer and Kerry's own sister. There's lots of breat ...more

Re-reading this after a gap of over 20 years, and loved it (almost) as much as ever. Charteris's witty prose is sheer joy and the stories are light-hearted pulp with more than enough jeopardy and action to keep you turning the pages, and the book has ...more
