Michelle Kadarusman is a middle-grade children's author, her novels include The Theory of Hummingbirds, Girl of the Southern Sea and Music for Tigers. She grew up in Melbourne, Australia, and has also lived in Indonesia and Canada. Her novels have earned many nominations and honors, including the Canadian Governor General's Literary Awards, Green Earth Books Awards, USBBY Outstanding International Books, Malka Penn Award for Human Rights in Children's Literature, NCTA Freeman Award honor book and Kirkus Best Middle Grade Books of the Year. In answer to your question, I would have to say the single most important message I hope young people take away from my books is a sense of their own empowerment, along with empathy for others. All of my books feature the themes of self-empowerment, self-acceptance, friendships, and celebrating differences - those traits seem hardwired in my stories!
