John Kotzian was born in Rogers City, Michigan located on the shore of Lake Huron and raised some 30 miles away in Hillman, Michigan. He is the great-great-grandson of the “Sky Pilot of the Great Lakes”, Rev. William H. Law.

His passion for the Great Lakes and its history grew from the stories handed down through both sides of his family about Rev. Law’s travels and relatives lost in the sinking of the S.S. Carl D. Bradley.

He currently resides with his wife, Kimberly, in Brooklyn, MI.

I had heard small portions of his life-story when I was growing up but I wanted to know more.

Around 2010 I was laid-off after 12 years from my day job working for Borders Group, Inc. and found I had a lot of time on my hands. So I started looking for more information. What I found was so expansive and had never been fully told before I decided it needed to be told. So I started writing it down.

Fast-forward a few years and a publisher picked up the story and the book became a reality. (less)

Anything else in the works? You did such a wonderful job with Sky Pilot of the Great Lakes. It was so interesting and well written. I live in Michigan and love anything about the Great Lakes. Keep writing!

I am also working on finishing up a Biography of Capt. Albert Ocha, whom you may remember from Sky Pilot. I also have a book of Semi-fictional, humorous, short stories about my travels around Michigan titled "You Can't Just Go Lookin' for Moose!" I'm hoping to have published soon. Thank you!(less)
