I was born and raised in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in a little city that's known to some as the Paris of the South and to others as the Freak Capital of the Nation - I just call it home. I came into this world intolerant of all things institutional, quit school twice, and spent a year in a mournful and drafty boarding house in Switzerland, but ultimately managed to graduate from Asheville High School and then from Harvard College, where I studied History and Literature. I do wish I had had room to add more details about my grandparents' pre-war childhoods, and about other members of my family, who all had extraordinary stories to tell. Just as an example, I originally included a section on how my grandmother decided to become a doctor, which started when she was five, and cut her doll's head open to see what was inside, which the entire family took as a sign she would go into medicine. But since it was really a story about Armand and Anna's relationship, I eventually made the decision to take most of that out. (less)
