Still recovering... but writing!
Hello all,
I seem to be over the worst of the illness, thank the gods.
I've been busy writing, so not much to report.
However, I thought I would share a little good news, one of my favorite authors recently published two more stories about some of my favorite characters!
If you are a fan of Barbara Hambly you should check out: http://www.barbarahambly.com/?page_id=78
If you aren't a fan, you should be!

Still alive... some cool stuff in the news.
Hello all,
Sorry it has been a while. My walking pneumonia decided to monkey stomp me. Not over it yet either, but on the mend... I hope.
Anyway, in real news:
The University of Bristol has managed to create 3-D holograms that can be felt. A step closer to airscreens!

Ancient lakes on Mars:

Last but not least is a cool article on the human origins of art. This is a little closer to field of expertise, being an archaeologist *grin*:

Ah, Pneumonia, how I missed thee... NOT!
I've spent the last week or two wondering why I was having trouble breathing. I just assumed it was because of the dust storms we've been having in the southwest. Then I was getting lightheaded. So I went to the doctor to get a new prescription on my inhaler (asthma from chemical burns on the lungs a few years ago) and my blood oxygen level was 84%. That is kind of low. A lot low.
No wonder I haven't felt particularly creative.
I will get back on track. I will post a teaser/sample from the new Tebrey book.
But not today.
---------------
This week in science!
---------------
Up first, my kind of handwavium - The science of comic books: http://www.wired.com/2014/11/can-hulk...
Lots of places are reporting about us finally landing a craft on a comet. This page is more fun: http://www.wired.com/2014/11/rosetta-...
This one is amusing. I've often had such thought myself, although I like Dawkins, sometimes he is a little too smug: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/11/de...
Bill Nye, sticking to the man: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/04/sci...

Updates and more science! Part II
Been really busy recently. I think that is a good thing, since it is on the next Tebrey novel.
First, I'd like send my condolences to the family of the co-pilot, Michael Alsbury, of Space Ship Two who died Friday. Pioneering a new frontier is never without loss, but the names of the brave souls who die will be remembered forever.
On a brighter note, I thought I would share a few interesting new things in science:
New DNA editing techniques that may eliminate genetic diseases: http://io9.com/researchers-have-just-...
Universal Basic Income to eliminate poverty: http://io9.com/how-universal-basic-in...
US looking to use drones to detect potential bio-terror weapons: https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportuni...

Updates and more science!
Happy Moon Day!
I hope you all had a good weekend. I spent mine replenishing the brain with books, movies, and weird conversation.
I wanted to expand on the first post a bit: I am currently working almost exclusively on The Madness Engine, the third book of The Awakening.
I say almost because I'm also finishing two pieces of short fiction I'll be posting here in the next few weeks.
The first is a storyline that was edited out of The Fallen. It takes place on Mars and didn't have a strong connection to the other characters, but I think it fills in some important background on what is happening in the Federation.
The second is a story about Hrothgar Tebrey that take place between the second and third book. Things don't always work out the way Tebrey hopes they will. Sometimes, things go really wrong.
Interesting science news:
Lockheed Martin may have developed fusion reactors: http://www.technologyreview.com/news/...
Shapeshifting carbon composites, because I like anything about shapeshifting: http://www.technologyreview.com/news/...
Thermoelectric converters that could cut fossil fuel emissions: http://www.technologyreview.com/news/...

Inaugural Post.
I've debated the merits of having a blog for years. I had one, once, but never could remember to write in it.
I'll be post weekly updates on my writing, writing process, and my interests: such as archaeology and science in general.
So... Here we go!
Writing:
My latest novel is coming along nicely and I hope to have it ready for the editor by the end of November. I'll be posting excerpts and talking about about the creative process in general in the next few weeks.
This week in archaeology:
Use of medical marijuana in ancient Siberia: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10...
More goodies from the Antikythera shipwreck: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/...
