Elaine Kozak has done many things in her life but found her true vocation making wine at a small estate winery she established with her husband on Canada’s west coast. She set out to write a memoir about winegrowing but somewhere along the line the book turned into vineyard mystery titled Root Causes and opened up a whole new world as a writer for her. Her new work, a family drama set in New Mexico titled The Lighthouse, has just been published.

Strong beginning, really captured and maintained voice of main character, many beautifully written passages. But unravels somewhat midway through and meanders to a bit of a frayed ending. And what happened to the octopus?

I dunno, Banville is one of my favourite writers but this book is like a great splash of snow slush on a windscreen. Protagonist is hapless, other characters completely lack charm or interest (most intriguing one is publican who quotes classics), plo ...more
