Summer Reading is Never Canceled
In our corner of the world, the next few months will look much different than we’d envisioned at the start of 2020. Our travel plans will shift slightly, because celebrations we’d anticipated attending are now postponed. Two of our kids are usually in school for most of the summer and now that schedule has been completely upended. One thing that hasn’t changed? My child-like anticipation for the books I’ll read (or plan to read) this summer. Because one thing remains the same: summer reading is never canceled.

Summer Reading is a Serious Affair
Since I discovered blogs about ten years ago, I’ve enjoyed following Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs. Darcy. Her annual reading guide is something I look forward to every spring. Earlier this week, I became a member of the What Should I Read Next community via Patreon just so I could get my hands on Anne’s Summer Reading Guide as soon as it dropped. She hosted a live unboxing event offering an exclusive front row seat as well as immediate access to an expanded version of her summer reading guide. It was like Christmas, my birthday, and a long walk through my favorite bookstore all wrapped up in one delightful event.
Highly Anticipated Audio
These are the audio books I’ve purchased and pre-ordered based on Anne’s recommendations. I am a bit of a snob regarding narrators. When Anne specifically mentioned the excellent quality of the audio versions of Beach Read and The Jane Austen Society, that was all the encouragement I needed. Elin Hilderbrand’s books are an auto-buy for me and often feature a particular narrator, Erin Bennett, who is one of my favorites.

Because Anne Said So
I’ve added the following titles to my summer to-be-read list based on Anne’s suggestions. After listening to Anne discuss these books, I promptly pre-ordered or ordered them from my favorite online retailers.

Heidi’s Highly Anticipated List
Before Anne released her summer reading guide and inspired me to add even more titles to my gigantic to-be-read pile, I had started my own list of highly anticipated new releases. Some of these I’ve read or I’m currently reading because I was given a complimentary copy by the publisher. Kerry Winfrey’s new release is a must-read for me because I loved her previous novel, Waiting for Tom Hanks. And because I’m a sucker for an illustrated cover, Eighty Days to Elsewhere by KC Dyer is on my list as well.

A Shout Out to my Harlequin Peeps
I am a published author with Harlequin Love Inspired, which means I love reading and writing contemporary romance novels. Maisey Yates, Lee Tobin McClain, RaeAnne Thayne and Jill Lynn are four authors whose books I often buy. When I have the privilege of attending a conference, I try to chat with these ladies, go to their sessions if they’re teaching and generally glean any tips or encouragement they offer. They all have new releases that I’m looking forward to buying and reading.

Your Turn
Friends, no matter what your summer looks like, there’s always time to get lost in a great story. Whatever you choose to read, I hope it’s a spectacular experience. If you’d like to have your own copy of Anne’s Summer Reading Guide, visit her online here. If podcasts are your jam, I highly recommend listening to What Should I Read Next. Content creators always appreciate new members joining their patreon community. You can become one of Anne’s Patreon supporters here. I’d love to hear what you’re reading, so drop a comment and let me know!

Spring Reading 2020

I’ve never had so much time to read and an overwhelming number of incredible books to choose from. I’ve also never struggled this much to concentrate. Anybody else feeling like the stress and monotony of the stay-at-home order is impacting their reading life?
I refuse to let this pandemic rob me of the joy of getting lost in a compelling story. In no particular order, here’s a list of the books I’m currently reading and loving this spring.
My friend Bethany’s new book releases in May. Click here to pre-order and read the first 3 chapters today.
Kristy Woodson Harvey’s Feels Like Falling arrives April 28, 2020.I’m almost finished reading my copy and it is delightful!
I just started this. Robyn Carr’s writing style is so captivating! Such a fun premise for a novel.
This is a fantastic debut. I love the characterization and the content is so timely.
The first book in Lee Tobin McClain’s new series is wonderful. I’m already smitten with the hero and his dog King. One audio book I’m loving
I’ve heard high praise for Becoming so I purchased the audio format. Sooo good! She’s an excellent narrator and I’m fascinated by her story. That’s the list of books I’m currently reading and loving + one audio book I’m delighted to listen to in this stay-at-home season.
What are you reading and loving right now? Leave a comment and let me know, then head over to Anne Bogel’s blog where she’s sharing the new and the notable, plus there are tons of great suggestions in the comments. Happy reading!

What I’m Reading

I’m a voracious reader, particular this time of year when my kids are in and out of school a lot but the weather isn’t great and we’re frequently hanging out at home. February was a delightful month for me, reading-wise. Most of what I read will release later this year, so I’m offering some great suggestions for titles you’ll definitely want to add to your spring TBR list.

If for Any Reason is an enjoyable read. Courtney Walsh does a wonderful job creating characters readers will root for, especially as they navigate some messy, complex issues. My favorite aspect of this novel is the hero, Hollis. He’s one of my new book boyfriends. You’re going to want to add this book to your beach bag. You can read my full review here.

In a word, this book is phenomenal! Before I Called You Mine takes readers on an incredible emotional journey as the heroine pursues international adoption. She’s a single woman who agrees to remain unmarried throughout the process. Despite her well-orchestrated plans, the most perfect potential husband strolls into her world and upends everything. Nicole crafts amazing characters and the chemistry she builds between the hero and heroine is like nothing else I’ve read.
I could go on and on, so feel free to read my full review here. Better yet, pre-order your copy today. This novel releases in late March and you will absolutely love it!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my complimentary ARC.

I just finished Carolina Breeze and it is such a sweet, satisfying read. Every time I read Denise Hunter’s work, I’m so impressed with her ability to craft a unique plot with characters I instantly adore. This is the second book in the Bluebell Inn series, but you don’t have to read the first book to enjoy this one. This releases in May and I highly recommend pre-ordering now. I’ll post a complete review on Goodreads later this spring.

Becky Wade dropped a new novella this week, delighting inspirational romance fans everywhere. The best part? It’s FREE. That’s right. A free novella which is also a prequel to her new Misty River Romance series. I’ve started reading Take a Chance on Me and it’s wonderful. If you haven’t already, click here to download your copy and enter Becky’s giveaway.
Honorable Mention

I saw Jessica Simpson’s interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today show recently promoting her new memoir. I’ve always had an awareness of who Jessica Simpson is and the success of her lifestyle brand, but I knew very little about her rise to fame. Or her many challenges. When Hoda asked her to sing “Amazing Grace”, I teared up. That’s when I knew I had to read this book. Everyone seemed to be raving about the audio version, so I’m listening to Open Book. It’s excellent. Jessica is the narrator of her own memoir, which makes it even more compelling. Her emotions ebb and flow as she walks us through the roller-coaster ride that is her life. I’m not finished listening yet but it will most definitely be one of my favorite books of 2020.
Essential Additions to your Spring TBR Pile
I’ve enjoyed sneak peeks of several titles releasing in the first half of 2020. Here are a handful of books you’ll want to add to your To-Be-Read piles.
Of Literature and Lattes by Katherine ReayThe Honey-Don’t List by Christina LaurenFeels Like Falling by Kristy Woodson Harvey
Thanks for stopping by. Leave a comment and tell me your favorite book that you’ve read this month. Happy reading!

3 Things Saving Me from Winter

Hello, friends!
We’re six weeks into the new year and a new decade. For some, the optimism is still high and those new bullet journals and paper planners are fueling our motivation.
But for others, 2020 already feels like an uphill slog. And the never-ending winter weather isn’t helping. Before you send me a message or post a comment declaring that the mid-South doesn’t even know the meaning of a real winter, I’d like to remind my audience that I lived in Alaska for almost twenty years. Thirty degrees (or often forty) below zero was the norm. Snow boots weren’t fashionable. Uggs were definitely NOT a thing. Winter gloves never quite kept our fingertips warm. The air was raw and the weather constantly antagonized us. By the time we got to January, spring still seemed years away.
Even though I moved away a long time ago, I haven’t forgotten how hard Alaskans worked to combat the elements. And the older I get, the more I notice how much we all struggle in our own winter seasons. Maybe your weather is great. Perhaps you’ve moved to the land of endless sunshine and moderate temperatures. While you can’t remember the last time you saw a snowflake outside your window, I’m guessing you’ve known a metaphorical winter. A barren season. The absence of emotional connection with other humans. We’ve all endured difficult emotional and physical hardships. Sometimes we need a friend to help us deal. Recently I read a great post by Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs. Darcy and she shared a great post called 3 Things Saving My Life Right Now. You can read it here. She also extended an invitation to share our own 3 things.
Here’s mine:
Reading Great Books
This probably is not a surprise. I love writing fiction and I also adore reading amazing books. Escaping into a fictional world and getting swept into the characters’ journeys helps me relax. Not only does an incredible story entertain me, it also inspires me to write well. On a side note, I’ve also given myself permission to abandon books that aren’t working for me. I used to feel compelled to keep reading all the way to the end, even if I was miserable. Nope. Not anymore. I have several books going at once and an audio book I’m listening to as well. So far, my favorite book of 2020 is Rachel Hauck’s The Fifth Avenue Story Society. I highly recommend!

Getting Crafty
As our boys have grown and the pace of life has ebbed and flowed, I’ve noticed my creative juices have mostly been channeled into writing. While I’m thankful for the opportunities that have come my way in publishing, the writing business is exactly that, a business. Sometimes I don’t want to “work” in the evenings and just want to hang out. Recently I revisited my craft closet and blew the proverbial dust off some half-finished projects. Cross-stitching is a craft I’ve always enjoyed. Currently I’m trying to finish the birth announcement for our youngest. He just turned 10. Don’t judge.

Going Outside
Maybe my 3rd thing should actually be owning a Goldendoodle because it’s our dog Finn who actually motivates me to go outdoors. We walk between 2 and 3 miles almost every day, in all kinds of weather. He loves to be outside and we both need the exercise. It’s a great time to listen to audio books and my favorite podcasts. The fresh air gets me motivated to tackle the rest of my day as well. Exercising isn’t easy and yet I always feel better once I’ve made the effort.

Most Anticipated Books of 2020

Happy New Year!
The beginning of 2020 means we have brand new books to read, right? I’m determined to step beyond my comfort zone and choose a wider variety of books this year. I’ve also upped my game a bit and I’m going for 65 books, which is ten more than I read last year.
Even though I still have a stack of books from 2019 (and 2018 and 2017) that I want to devour, here are several soon-to-be released titles I can’t wait to read. In the interest of brevity, I’m limiting this post to books releasing before May 1st. Without further delay, here’s my list of most anticipated books of early 2020.
The Fifth Avenue Story Society by Rachel Hauck
The Honey Don’t List by Christina Lauren
Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese
Feels Like Falling by Kristy Woodson Harvey
Big Lies in a Small Town by Diane Chamberlain
Sisters by Choice by Susan Mallery
Pre-order here and receive lots of wonderful goodies!
The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley
Love, Unscripted by Owen Nicholls
Book 1, The Off Season series by Lee Tobin McClainTwo quick tips for reading more great books
Track your reading: keeping a running list of the books I want to read + the books I’ve finished helps me have a more fulfilling reading life. Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs. Darcy has lots of tools including free downloads to track your progress. Tackle a challenge: a no stress, just for fun reading challenge helps me choose different books that I might not otherwise gravitate toward. Modern Mrs. Darcy has a fun one. Bethany House Publishers posted a monthly challenge here. For fans of Harlequin Love Inspired, a new reading challenge just launched. For more details (there are prizes hint hint) visit the Love Inspired Authors and Readers Facebook Group here.
Your turn: which book(s) are you super excited to read in early 2020? Leave a comment and let me know. Thanks for stopping by and happy reading!
Many thanks to Net Galley for the complimentary ARC’s of several novels featured in this post. Full reviews will be posted on Goodreads and the applicable retailers once the titles officially release.

7 Steps Toward Your Best NaNoWriMo Ever
November (National Novel Writing Month) is almost here. Are you knee-deep in preptober? Or are you wondering what NaNoWriMo even means? In short, writers around the world will attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days. The communal spirit fuels this daunting task, but it is easy to get frustrated and give up mid-journey. Take heart, writer friends. With careful planning and good old-fashioned determination, you can successfully conquer the NaNoWriMo mountain! Here are 7 steps you can take to make this your best NaNoWriMo ever.

Declare Your Intentions
Tell your mom. Tell your friends. Tell the world. Committing to National Novel Writing Month is a big step. Stating your goal out loud and in writing establishes accountability. This requires telling the people in your life (or complete strangers on the internet) that you WILL write 50,000 words in 30 days. C’mon, set a goal. You’ve got this!
Find Your Friends
Visit NaNoWriMo.org and create an account. Then name your project and start finding buddies as well as special events scheduled in your region. There will more than likely be a write-in planned near you. This is an opportunity to gather with other writers and get words on the page. There’s also an official NaNoWriMo Facebook Group and searching #nanowrimo2019 or #writingcommunity or #nanowrimoprep helps find other participants as well. While it’s tempting to climb into your writer cave and embark on a solitary journey, trust me when I say you’re gonna want some friends along for this wild-and-crazy ride.
Send Your Inner Critic Packing
The goal of NaNoWriMo is 50,000 words on the page. That’s an average of 1667 words per day, if you are able to write every day for 30 days. There isn’t time for editing or second-guessing or deleting files. So if your inner critic is loud, obnoxious and stifles your creativity, send that unwanted guest packing. No worries, the editor will be invited back later when it’s time to polish and revise your NaNoWriMo project.
Tackle the Time Suckers
Life is unpredictable and we can’t prepare for every scenario. There are certain events in November that I’m confident will happen: a major holiday, kids home from school, probably at least one person in my life will get sick. Our weather will transition from cool to cold and suddenly none of my children will have a winter coat or pants that fit. Instead of getting frustrated, I can mentally prepare for how to deal. For example, I’ll delegate (ask my husband to take the boys shopping) and plan extra writing sessions for days when everyone is out of the house. I’m also responsible for feeding 5 people every day, so I’m trying to plan meals/grocery shop in advance so I’ll have enough time to write consistently.

Essential Ingredients
I heard New York Times Bestselling author Frank Peretti speak recently. First, he reminded us that every story needs a hero. Then he said to ask 4 questions: What is your story about? What does your hero want? What happens if he doesn’t get what he wants? Who or what will stand in the way?
No matter how strongly you feel about flying by the seat of your pants, I promise that by day 8, you’ll desperately long for a road map. Otherwise, you’ll wander aimlessly and might be tempted to give up. So, gather your ingredients now. There’s still time to dream up a hero or heroine and make his or her imaginary life miserable with plenty of dreadful obstacles and lots of internal conflict.
If you need help planning, the NaNoWriMo website has a wonderful handbook available here.
Celebrate Success
Humans value rewards for our accomplishments. Positive reinforcement encourages us to keep moving forward. There are virtual badges available online for hitting certain word count milestones, but I need more concrete rewards. Chocolate, a latte, going for a walk, holiday shopping, baking or reading a much-anticipated novel are all ways I celebrate success in my writing life.
Take Care of You
While you’ll certainly encounter plenty of creatives who can sustain a phenomenal pace, summit the NaNoWriMo mountain early and brag about how they haven’t slept for 23 days … you don’t want to be that writer. Believe it or not, this is supposed to be fun. Establishing a workspace that’s conducive to writing is half the battle. You might need to work in public places like libraries and coffee shops, or declare a corner of the guest room your temporary office, or maybe you have to write on the train as you commute. Carve out time to write AND time to sleep, eat, and exercise and you’ll be well on your way to making this your best NaNoWriMo ever!
Your turn: leave a comment and tell me one fun fact about your NaNoWriMo project. If you’re seeking buddies for NaNoWriMo, feel free to add me. My handle is HeidiMcCahanWrites. I’m also on Instagram as @heidimccahan.author, where I’ll be sharing about my own NaNoWriMo journey all month long. Happy writing, friends!

10 Favorite Small-Town Romances

That Artsy Reader Girl is hosting a fabulous conversation about favorite tropes today and I can’t resist participating in the link-up. To see the complete list of tropes and to share your favorites, click here.
As both a writer and voracious reader, it’s almost impossible to choose one favorite trope. There are so many ways to tell a compelling story! But if I’m forced to choose, I’d have to go with small-town romance. I love this particular trope because the small-town setting delivers a satisfying story. The communities portrayed in these novels not only bring the hero and heroine together, but also provoke feelings of belonging and camaraderie. And what’s not to love about unique secondary characters and annual festivals? The small-town romance reminds us that we are connected and often share a history and a commitment to one another. Finally, I’m from a small town and maybe on some level these stories remind me of home.
My 10 Favorite Small-Town Romances
RaeAnne Thayne’s Haven Point Series: I jumped into the middle of this series with book five, so I need to go back and read the first four. I’ve adored reading about Haven Point, Idaho and the many fantastic characters who populate this community. RaeAnne writes incredible romances and her heroes are some of my all-time favorites. I highly recommend her upcoming release, Coming Home for Christmas.
![Coming Home for Christmas (Haven Point Book 10) by [Thayne, RaeAnne]](https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/hostedimages/1566383688i/28027864.jpg)
2. Susan May Warren’s Montana Rescue Series
I devoured this whole series as fast as I could get my hands on each new release. Susan May Warren is brilliant at crafting fantastic inspirational romantic suspense!3. Becky Wade’s Sweet on You (Bradford Sisters Romance #3)

I’m a huge fan of Becky Wade’s books and I read everything she writes. The community of Merriweather in the Bradford Sisters series is especially delightful. Plus, this novel is a friends-to-lovers story, which is an added bonus. This series has a cast of incredibly crafted characters, compelling plots and super swoon-worthy romance. I’m looking forward to whatever Becky publishes next!
4. Denise Hunter’s Summer Harbor Series: the combination of the Callahan Brothers + the community of Summer Harbor, Maine = one of my all-time favorite inspirational small-town romance series. What more can I say? I will be #teambeau forever.

5. A New Shade of Summer (Love in Lenox) by Nicole Deese
Hooray for Lenox! Such a cute fictional town and Nicole writes incredibly romantic stories with a thought-provoking message.6. Paper Hearts by Courtney Walsh
I love every small town that Courtney dreams up, but Love’s Park was especially fun.7. Talk of the Town by Lisa Wingate
This is vintage Lisa Wingate and the 1st book I read that she’d written. I was hooked from the first chapter. Lisa’s gone on to write incredibly complex novels. Talk of the Town is still one of my favorites.8. Jill Lynn’s Colorado Grooms Series

I love Jill Lynn’s writing style. She’s funny and poignant and her heroes are so amazing! Her heroines are beautifully crafted as well with inner strength yet relatable flaws. I especially love the community she’s created in this series. I highly recommend The Rancher’s Unexpected Baby. Her new release is The Bull-Rider’s Secret, and I’m sure that’s fantastic too.
9. Falling Home by Karen White

10. Sandpiper Cove: A Hope Harbor Novel by Irene Hannon

Thanks for stopping by! Don’t forget to visit That Artsy Reader Girl and share your favorite book tropes. By the way, I’ve written several small-town romances and if you’d like to check those out, you can find them here. My Emerald Cove series is available for Kindle Unlimited subscribers, so if you have Kindle Unlimited, I hope you’ll read my books.
Happy reading!

Celebrating Sweet Melody at Seabrook
Our family visiting Seabrook, WAPhoto credit: Jerome Petteys Design
About ten years ago, my parents, sister and our families discovered a gorgeous coastal community three hours west of Seattle, Washington. Established in 2004, this oceanfront hamlet of vacation homes and permanent residents provides families with an opportunity to relax, reconnect and explore the surrounding beaches and old-growth forest.
We adored Seabrook from the moment we arrived.
This year our parents are married fifty years, so we happily celebrated at Seabrook. As a gift to our family, a dear friend joined us for a couple of days and took our pictures. (My husband Steve is not in the photos. Yes, we are still married. He had to stay home, work, and deal with our leaky roof. Somebody has to be the responsible adult in our relationship, right?)
The highlight reel:
The golden hour before the sunset is incredible!
Oceanfront living really agrees with me.
Most mornings were foggy which made the clear days even more enjoyable.
Hanging out with my sister is always a blessing. Saying hello to the pretty horse in Seabrook’s farm district is an added bonus.
Did I mention it gets a little foggy sometimes? This was both spooky and exciting because it rolled in very quickly. We couldn’t resist trying to “find” the ocean.
Visiting the community fire pits, building a fire and making S’mores is one of my favorite activities at Seabrook.
It was so rewarding to hold my new book in the place that inspired the novel.A wonderful full-circle moment!

My 2019 Summer Reading List
“She read books as one would breathe air, to fill up and live.”
Annie Dillard

I love that quote by Annie Dillard. I can’t imagine any season of life without a book, but summer reading is truly one of my favorite seasons for choosing what to read next. The novels I gravitate toward in the summer are often breezy and fun, although I’m including a few gritty, emotional titles on my list this time. The season calls for change, a different pace, an ending of something and an intentional pause before we begin something new.
Usually I take more of a whatever-suits-my-fancy approach to my summer reading plans, but this month my favorite podcasts devoted a lot of attention to books and reading preferences. After listening to a few episodes, suddenly I found myself with an intriguing list of recommendations.
12 Books I Simply Must Read

Many thanks to Anne Bogel for her wonderful Summer Reading Guide, which heavily influenced my selections. The All Our Favorite People podcast has a fantastic interview with Claire Gibson, author of Beyond the Point, which I highly recommend listening to. Also, Annie F. Downs interviewed Anne Bogel on this episode of That Sounds Fun and Anne drops all sorts of summer reading goodness during their conversation. Check it out!
There you have it. The books I plan to acquire and read this summer. Leave a comment below and tell me what’s on your summer reading list.
