I began writing the book inside my head to preserve my own early memories of a happy but fragmented childhood spent split between two families. There came a time when I realized that my personal coming of age story was a testament to the demise of a lifestyle--the small family farm. Many readers have assured me that accounts of farm life are accurate and support their own memories.

World War II disrupted families in many ways. Those who survived combat returned home changed and often hardened. All Americans suddenly faced broadened horizons. For example, women started working outside the home. My story tells of these forces at work on my own family.

The ultimate motivation for actually writing my story was to pass on my heritage to my sons and grandchildren so they could meet their ancestors as living, hard-working, funny, and flawed human beings--not as tombstones. (less)

I do go back (in memory) nearly every day. Sometimes when the pace of daily activity seems overwhelming I envision sitting on the front porch of our farmhouse and watching the fireflies, listening to the bob-whites and whippoorwills. I guess that’s my way of creating a “Zen” moment. If I had to pick just one activity, I guess it would be saddling up Gypsy to go on our one and only long ride with my cousin. Little did we know we would never do that again! (less)
