If I'm really stuck, I try to vision my characters before I go to sleep, and hope that while in my dream state, my subconscious can work out the block. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. And for those of legal age, having an adult beverage helps too. I prefer an ice cold hard cider. It helps me clear my head in order to hear my character's voices.

I'm no Hemingway, but when he said, "Write drunk, edit sober," he had a good point. Not that you have to get drunk... but you need to find something that allows you to relax, whether it's a glass of wine, meditating, knitting, going for a run, cleaning... pick your poison. If you've got a head full of worries and stress from other things going on in your life, more than likely it's going to come out in your writing, or not come out at all.(less)

I had/have the privilege of staying at home to raise my girls, but at times, like any other stay at home mother knows, the days spent in isolation with a baby's repetitive elementary activities can get a little mind-numbing. I felt as if I beginning to lose who I was, starving for adult conversation, and need something, anything to help feed my formerly creative brain.

I tried writing, and found that I was better at it than I ever expected. I still surprise myself sometimes, when I go back and read my own words. That came out of me? Wow! I never went to school to learn creative writing, and I know that I need a lot of work. But the great thing about writing, (and reading) is if you keep doing it, it gets better. It gets easier. You end up wanting more.(less)
