George Szirtes’ intro to Kinga Fabó’s 2 poems translated by him, published in Modern Poetry in Translation, 2017

Kinga Fabó, Hungarian poet, linguist and essayist has written five books of poetry but I didn’t know her work until someone else asked if 1 would translate a couple of her poems. People do occasionally ask this — so few of us translate poetry from Hungarian after all — and sometimes th... Read more of this blog post »

“Drags it in circles. Lassoes me
’round. – Drums up her clan.

Ticking away, the old bitch is.
Catch me she will, where’er I am.”
Kinga Fabo, Racun

“In the tiny crack between truth
and falsity.”
Kinga Fabo, Racun

“Happiness like an unmoving dancer.”
Kinga Fabo, Racun

“I’m going to kill the president.
I promise. I surrender. I'm sorry.
I'm gay. I'm pregnant. I'm dying.
I'm not your father. You're fired.
Fire. I forgot your birthday.
You will have to lose the leg.
She was asking for it.
It ran right under the car.
It looked like a gun. It's contagious.
She’s with God now.
Help me. I don't have a problem.
I’ve swallowed a bottle of aspirin.
I'm a doctor. I'm leaving you.
I love you. Fuck you. I’ll change.”
Ben Lerner

“don't get too close,
i'll turn you
into poetry”
Orion Carloto

“Handbag by Ruth Fainlight
My mother's old leather handbag,
crowded with letters she carried
all through the war. The smell
of my mother's handbag: mints
and liptsick and Coty powder.
The look of those letters, softened
and worn at the edges, opened,
read, and refolded so often.
Letters from my father. Odour
of leather and powder, which ever
since then has meant womanliness,
and love, and anguish, and war.”
Ruth Fainlight

“Crow's Nerve Fails by Ted Hughes

Crow, feeling his brain slip,
Finds his every feather the fossil of a murder.

Who murdered all these?
These living dead, that root in his nerves and his blood
Till he is visibly black?

How can he fly from his feathers?
And why have they homed on him?

Is he the archive of their accusations?
Or their ghostly purpose, their pining vengeance?
Or their unforgiven prisoner?

He cannot be forgiven.

His prison is the earth. Clothed in his conviction,
Trying to remember his crimes

Heavily he flies.”
Ted Hughes

“Christopher Crawford

How gay is it
for two men
to stroke
the same dog
at the same time.
What if they’re both
sitting on a sofa watching
When Harry Met Sally.
How about two men watching
the same gorgeous sunset
from the same high ridge.
And if a man daydreaming
on a bus ride finds his eyes when focus returns,
on the crotch
of the man seated opposite.
How about two men riding
a bus into a gorgeous sunset
or two gorgeous men watching
a sunset in silence. How about
two men daydreaming and stroking
a gorgeous dog and the dog makes
a strange deep sound of pleasure.
What if the men are old friends.
What if they’re brothers.
What if there’s music playing.”
Christopher Crawford
