Ann Major was born in 1928 in Budapest, which at the time competed socially and culturally with Paris. Of Jewish origin but thoroughly assimilated, Ann received an excellent education which, together with her youthful optimism, helped her through the terrible months of the Holocaust, the brutally long siege of Budapest and the arrival as well as the depredations of the Soviet Red Army. Fleeing Hungary at the time of the Communist take-over, Ann and her husband settled in Sydney, Australia.

Once their circumstances made it possible and their children no longer needed her full attention, Ann, hoping to continue her interrupted studies, enrolled as a mature age student in the Arts Faculty of Macquarie University. Her passion for history kept he
