Now that doesn't mean my stories might not change in the middle (they frequently do and my outlines have to be revised), but knowing where you're going tends to obviate this possibility.

Overcoming writer's block also requires knowing yourself. It took me a while to figure out that my mind deals with impending writer's block by avoiding writing altogether (I get more easily distracted or come up with excuses why I can't write that day). So when I notice myself doing this, I force myself to sit down and at least write something. It may be crap that I completely rewrite later, but this usually is a good starting point that I can much more easily revise into something I want rather than trying to make it perfect on the first go.(less)

When I get a burning idea for a short-story, I usually put my novel writing on hold for a few days to work on that, then go back to my novel.

Book-wise, I'm currently working on an ambitious project tentatively titled "Dawn Break." It takes place on a planet with unique characteristics (saying more on that point would be a spoiler) and follows Kala, a young girl from a society dominated by superstition. The story tracks Kala as she struggles to find her place in a world that doesn't accept her. It follows her figurative and literal quest of self-discovery -- venturing into a land or perpetual darkness to confront the monsters that live there.(less)
