Both of them are very innocent but determined. Sybil never seems to feel she's in over her head whens he commits to becoming a nurse and forges ahead when it's difficult, so I get the feeling that, as a middle-class housewife in Dublin, she was the same way. Tom is an idealist and he's surprised when the tzar's family is shot and later when that family's house is burned in Dublin and he has to run and leave Sybil behind. He is almost more naive than Sybil and needs her strength. She needs his independence to break free of the suffocating life she's been born to. I would have loved to see a spin off show of their lives in Dublin.

Ask me next week and it might be Ronan Dex and Jennifer Keller on Stargate Atlantis or Georgianna and Darcy from Rhys Bowen's Royal Spyness series (though that might not be until summer because I think that's when the next book is due.)(less)

Don’t Say a Word Chapter 6 (draft)

Chapter 6

“Hello?” The voice was still as familiar as her own. More.

“Mom?”

The pause lasted a week and an instant. “Taylor?”

“Yes.”

“Sweetheart. I never thought…. Are you all right? I’ve been following your press.” She laughed. “I imagined what I would say so many times and now I don’t know what to say. I’m so sorry.”

Taylor swallowed. She had meant to ask her question and get off the phone, but her m

Utterly worthless and badly written. The author misuses words (i.e. persist in stead of consist) so he obviously doesn’t have the vocabulary to write. I actually gave up on the book when he misattributed an Anais Nin quote to Stephen Covey. Obviously ...more

The highest praise I can give a book is that I didn't know how it was going to end by the middle. This one I did not see coming and yet. looking back, it was there the whole time.

“No. Not another dime.” The man at the table said into the phone. “The sucker bank is closed.” Sucker bank. Good one. Alex gestured at the bare table, nothing but the daisy in the little vase in the center and a half empty sugar caddy.”
Christa Maurice, Waiting For A Girl Like You

“The plate looked like five-star quality. Mushroom sauce trailed artfully over a thick, juicy steak. The baked potato should have been on the cover of a magazine. The crisp, golden skin split to allow a perfect square of rich yellow butter to melt into the fluffy mash with a sprinkling of fresh chives over top. The herbs had been clipped just this morning from the garden Paul maintained in his backyard. The salad balanced in such a perfect tower that Alex wasn’t sure she’d get it to the table without having it topple over. A crystal wine glass filled with jewel-toned red wine completed the meal.”

I don't normally set a reading goal for the year. Some years I read a lot, some not as much. But I have a 3 page wishlist for the library!
