GP Hutchinson, a member of Western Writers of America, fell in love with the Old West decades ago—the gritty reality of the era, the daunting yet breathtaking scope and scale of the land, and the colorful (if somewhat fanciful) tales of heroes and heroines who overcame the odds. Texas was his home for a few years, and subsequent visits to states throughout the West have only served to deepen his enthusiasm for the region and his appreciation of its people.

In 2015 he published his first Western novel, Strong Convictions, which won him the Western Fictioneers Peacemaker Award for Best First Western of that year, as well as a National Indie Excellence Award. Strong Suspicions, the second volume in the Emmett Strong Western series, garnered a

Thanks for your interest in the Emmett Strong series. I'm really glad you're enjoying it. Since I've just signed a multi-book contract with Dusty Saddle Publishing, I thought it would be odd for my first novel with them to be Book 4 in an existing series. Consequently, I'm starting fresh with a new novel with new characters. This does not, however, mean that I'm finished with the story of Emmett and Li. It's a great deal of fun to write about them, so I have every intention of continuing their saga. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the new upcoming novel just as much as the Emmett Strong series. The answer to this one depends on where I am in the writing process.

If I'm at the very beginning, wondering what I want a new book to be about, I've found that I need to spin off 5-10 possible story lines and see which one captures my imagination. How do I do that? Usually I start with a single character. Then I put that character into a jam or into a troubling situation. From there, I ask myself, now what will he or she do? Whatever comes to mind, I run with it until I decide whether that premise shows any promise for a full-blown plot.

If on the other hand I'm already into the story and I find myself stuck, the easiest remedy is to stop and evaluate what my character's goal is at that point in the story. Once I've reoriented myself to his goal, I start looking for new obstacles or opposition to that goal. That's usually enough to get me going again and moving the story forward.(less)

So Ready to Write More!

I am not at all unique among folks who write and publish novels these days, in that a great, great many of us write while holding down a day job. William Faulkner even advised novelists not to write as a profession, but rather to do so only as a hobby. (He considered himself a farmer by vocation and a writer by avocation. I suppose that reflects a certain zen before zen was a thing in North Ame...

Who am I to stand in judgment of a classic?

"Captain Blood" is a classic for good reason. Sure, it's a challenge for 21st century readers to wade through the archaic language of a novel written nearly 100 years ago, but Sabatini's mastery of
