I had a natural curiosity to know more about the story behind the story of this woman, Phoebe, who was chosen by the Apostle Paul to carry his letter from southern Greece to Rome to the first century Christians living there. The first century Roman Empire wasn't particularly kind to women and their aspirations. In fact, women's activities were curtailed in many respects. I really wanted to imagine a believable backstory for Phoebe. The Apostle Paul is often portrayed to be a sort of misogynist, so why would he choose a woman living in a small Greek town south of Corinth to carry his precious and important letter on a nearly 1000 mile journey? That was my starting point.

Great storytelling is the thread that connects generations. No matter the time period, the challenges of humanity remain the same. Love, jealousies, the quest for power, sin, redemption, family struggles...the list goes on. The issues we face are timeless and universal.

From an early age I've been fascinated with books that transport me to another time and place. Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie books, Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, Esther Forbes Johnny Tremain, Willa Cather's O Pioneers! and My Antonia, are a few of the books that had a lasting impact on me. Those stories made people and places real to me, even though their life's circumstances were vastly different from mine. I learned valuable lessons from those books. I believe Christian historical fiction can have the same impact on readers.(less)
